Running through Steam Greenlight, I came across this game.

In a nutshell, it's Voxel-based, so it looks like Minecraft, and you start by building your own monstrosity of a race by Frankensteining together different body parts, and get spawned in a town with a bunch of other freaks like you.  You can then either go "adventuring" by killing everyone you find, ala Minecraft, or you can become mayor, and lead your minions to global domination.

The first-person perspective is a bit cubeworld/Skyrim, along with the chance to place blocks, since you hypothetically get special attacks later, and you have quests to complete, which are generated from towns needing different things.

The mayoral menus turn it sorta DF-like, where you have an overhead view, and zone for different types of buildings.  Your people need food/walls/defenses, etc.  If you aren't mayor, this stuff is supposed to happen on its own, and rival civs can come smash your stuff.

Oh, and it has technology advancements, so you can then make spaceships and conquer galaxies.  (MWAHAHAHA.)  Or, you know, get conquered because rival civs might have orbital lasers and you are still in the Middle Ages.

They also have a dev team that's been willing to listen to me suggest Dwarf Fortress ideas, and DF missteps, so in all, it seems like it could grow into fairly dwarfy game.

Kickstarter page/video here.

Initial demo can be downloaded here.

They have a forum here, and I've been going onto their IRC chat at #imaginenations on www.quakenet.org to ask them to include microcline deposits in their geology, just to help feel at home.  They now also have a Steam group - http://steamcommunity.com/groups/imaginenations

Looks pretty interesting!

(Sadly all I can think of when I see the words "Imagine Nations" is some weird mashup between Imagine Dragons and AWOLNATION. :P)

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Oh, right, and I should add - the way that you control your minions when you become a mayor is through a mayor's desk, which switches gameplay view mode to overhead isometric view, where you get DF-style controls over things like ordering people to build what where or excavating areas.  (And they advance in DF-style skills.) There's a similar tactical board for if you are a general, and you get military commands.  (Just don't get ganked while at your general's post.)

You also have "blueprints", which are basically ways to clone-stamp buildings you want your minions to produce, so you can blot out the sun with the smoke of your factories by just copy-pasting factory models over and over.

I swear to god, if this will be moddable. I will...
- Create the Cybermen. YOU WILL BE DELETED.
- Create the Time Lords. FOR GALLIFREY!
- Create the Daleks. EXTERMINATE!
In that order.

Actually, yeah, they advertise that it will be pretty heavily moddable, and that they're going to try to put in modding tools used to create the game in as part of the game.  (Modding tools being part of the splash screen menu, according to the promo video.)  And the "parts" you add for their head affect their default AI, while their legs/"locomotion part" affect how they move, so you can make Daleks that will EXTERMINATE any fools who dare build such offensive things as STAIRS!

The trailer kinda looks pre-rendered in spots, the way the camera is moving in the first person shots is highly un-natural to gameplay.

It's very pie in the sky but their video is not very good and it really doesn't seem like it'll make it.

It seems like they put up the thing on Kickstarter a little early.  The first day, they only had like 7 people, and they were still contacting gaming press.  It basically just popped up on Greelight at just the right time for it to be near the top when I was looking.

That probably also explains the fact that they used some camera-on-rails over the same building, and they probably haven't rendered more than just those human-looking villagers when they say they're going to include aliens - it's just not much beyond the initial stages.  (They're working on the Stone Age, first, apparently.)

But then, if you donate, they let you play through alpha, so it would hypothetically be just like DF in that regard, as well.

Plus, talking to these guys over IRC, they seem receptive to having DF-style geology. (Strike microcline in fully realized 3d! See in stunning HD graphics how that stone has a slightly less than 90 degree angle in its grain! Savor the bright cyan!) Unlike Minecraft, they start with a full world (although the planet is limited in size,) and have a sort of DF-worldgen-like system, rather than making it up as you keep walking.  Hence, it's a (cube) planet with two poles. (Apparently, you can just walk over one corner, and start falling on the next side of the cube, like Mario Galaxy, although it counts as a mountain range that reaches low-Earth-orbit to do so, so you need to carry oxygen with you or tunnel through the Earth somehow to get there...)

I'll have to check this out tonight. Certainly sounds like it has some potential, at least.

the fly through camera and the weird little blocks texture they apply to the faces really put me off from backing. especially the fly through camera. their concept is great though.

If you're at all interested, I seriously recommend you use the IRC chat - they're highly responsive, especially since few other people are using the chat right now.

I've been talking to the guy in charge of art, and he's said that microcline mugs are totally workable - as in, whatever stone you carve a mug out of, it's got that stone's texture in it.

I'm now trying to see if he can make the barrels menace with spikes of pig tail.

DF doesn't mold players into its image - DF merely selects those who were always ready for DF.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?

Hm...  It has great potential, but there doesn't seem to be much mainstream interest in it.  I might wait a while to see if the kickstarter fares up, but I'll wait to fund it.

Definitely an interesting concept, relevant to my interests in the very least.
