So, I had dwarven soldier with *very weak* and wanted to make him stronger, letting him work out on the weight bench. He now has a Legendary+5 Skill as an athlete, but still is "very weak", it took about one and a half year of repeating work out. So: Is the wieghtbench not working?

from my understanding from lurking, dwarves can train to 'double' there stats

you can change his caste into a legionaire or something at the garrison as that re-rolls all his stats for better or worse, correct me if i'm wrong

Which skill used to be the Athlete one?

In vanilla, dwarves can train to double their stats, or the average stat plus their starting value, whichever is higher. Since it's defined in the raws, it can be modded to something different.
