(tame bat) has flown its way out of confinement!
« on: November 20, 2013, 01:00:04 am »

I had an elven caravan appear, and right after an announcement appeared "(tame bat) has flown its way out of confinement!" (exact quote). What makes it possible for bats to do that?

Huh, I have never seen this before. Interesting.

Sometimes traders bring vermin pets. Some of them can gnaw their way out of cages, bats are an example, so when the caravan arrived the bat escaped and you got a message.

If you give a non-vermin creature the tags to gnaw through things, can you have normal creatures that can break out of cages?
That would be very useful for mods.

I think there's a separate token for that, but I'm not sure.

You're playing a modified version of Dwarf Fortress which includes one of my binary patches. Specifically, it includes this one, which I explicitly noted as causing the very problem you're seeing, though whoever built your patched binary seemingly didn't care, resulting in somebody actually reporting it as a bug.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Possibly one of the lazy newb packs, I use peridexiserrants and get that occasionally.

I've also had it with various other vermin and I'm wondering how the heck do I get rid of them? They don't seem to cause any significant FPS loss and the non-flying ones eventually fall prey to cats or falcons (or seem to leave the map?) but the bats seem impossible to catch, or get rid of.

Use dfhack's "slayrace" command if they become bothersome.

I don't think DFhacks slayrace command works on vermin as it doesn't list the tame vermin.

Or if it does, I didn't know about it.

Use dfhack's "slayrace" command if they become bothersome.
Units (i.e. large creatures) and vermin are completely different things, and "slayrace" only operates on units.
