My friend tells me:

-It's more Elder Scrolls than a standard EQ/WoW style MMO.
-That said, it feels like they started with the latter and infused some of the former. This is true for combat in particular.
-There's not quite the feeling that you can go anywhere and do anything there is in ES games. It feels more like a typical orderly progression of content, from zone to zone, doing the quests that are there and fighting enemies that are there for your level.
-I think maybe the zone/level progression ratio is the cause for there not being that much option side stuff you can just run off and find, at least early on.

I could probably go on to specifics, but that's the conclusion I think they lead to. All that seems too deeply ingrained for them to suddenly turn around and change. So far, it's actually what I'd call one of the more engaging and fun standard style MMO's I've ever played. I'd even hazard saying it does what WoW does, but better. Still it's not the holy grail many have wanted, in that it's an MMO adapted to be more like The Elder Scrolls Skyrim, rather than an Elder Scrolls game adapted to be Online.

If anyone paid attention to those leaks, you'd know that this is a very limited beta, as in the testers are being told to test a couple specific systems, with everything else being outright disabled. There are large swaths of the UI that simply don't work or are replaced by very obvious placeholders. I'd find it nearly impossible to make any reasonable impressions regarding the final product under such circumstances. It also makes hunting down more leaks not worthwhile since there's very little information to be gleamed from them.

I don't see how this whole sealed lips thing is any bit important when I read an article about it in PCGamer before I even saw this thread (though to be fair, I haven't paid too much attention to b12 latel-HERESY! *BLAM*

I feel like Sensei's friend and PCGamer got the same general feel from it. I won't be getting involved regardless, as MMOs aren't my thing for the most part. Also, as a huge fan of lore (I tend to go on wikis for things and read whatever comes up when I hit random page. The 40K Lexicanum has eaten up more of my time than I care to admit) I really dislike the fist that's being shoved right into my knowledge hole.

Disclosure: I don't give a shit about lore.

But: I sometimes wonder why they can't just stick to their lore to appease lore-fans. Is it so hard to not totally retcon everything constantly? It's just goofy.

I have a horrible feeling that this is going to end up going the way of SWTOR - essentially a single-player IP that has been shoe-horned into an MMO whilst managing to lose most of the character that made it an engaging single-player game.

Things like TES should have stayed as they are. There are very few satisfying single-player experiences left that don't then tack on, or attempt to create, some kind of multi-player mode where you have to interact with imbeciles.

Single player experiences can't charge a monthly fee, or more common these days can't have a cash shop to sell hats.

Dead space 3 begs to differ on the latter of those statements.

Anyone of the equivalent to the royal bloodline in a nomadic group would have a sun tattooed on their hand, or a scrotum on their forehead (it's a little-known fact that fraternities are based off of long-forgotten tribes).

It's not a closed beta. It's an open beta with a NDA, which is something slightly different.
If anyone else was confused by this and went to go sign up for the open beta and get access to the elder scrolls online open beta; he is incorrect.  It is indeed a very limited closed NDA beta right now, you can still sign up; but likely won't get in until 2014.

And that's the problem.

You don't buy hats in DS3, you pay2win crafting... which is the same as the cheat DLCs games have had for a while now it's just moved into the game.

Which I guess is not fundamentally different but technically I'm still correct (and technically correct is the best kind of correct :p).

But I think it still explains why they try to MMO everything pretty well, the overwhelming majority (if not all) new MMOs have a cash shop full of cosmetics (and sometimes pay2win), while the overwhelming majority of single player games do not. I can only theorize that it means MMO cash shops are massively more profitable (which makes sense, why waste real money on pretend bling if you can't pretend other people are jealous of it?).

As do 90% of App Store games.

Most of them are also free, which is a whole different situation. If companies want to make a game free I have no problem with any sort of micro-transactions they want to throw in there.

Exactly. I want to see exactly one revenue stream for the game. Purchase price, monthly subscription, or cash shop.

If I pay for a subscription, I shouldn't feel like there's other stuff out that there that players who are even more premium than me have access to.

If I pay for an initial purchase, I shouldn't have a subscription. In corollary, if there's a subscription, don't try to squeeze another 4 months' subscription costs out of me initially for a purchase price. Not even if there's a single-player campaign.

So.. I get to play the beta over the weekend.
Finally I can try to see if the game will be worth buying (and annually pay for) or not.

Whenever I sign up for things I always give clearly false information. I pick the oldest date of birth possible, name it something like "X Z" or "Santos L. Halper", and use the phone and address of a pizza place in Boston. I have email accounts dedicated to absorbing spam, which are also set up with clearly sham information. Nobody needs to know my shit just so I can post a tech support question.
