Console Game of the Generation
« on: November 19, 2013, 07:56:16 pm »

PS4 and XBone are coming out, and Giantbomb did exactly what I was thinking about asking B12.... what do you think has been the best gaming experience of the console generation?  I know they'll still be around and more games will appear yada yada, but to date, whaddya think?

Looking at my 360 games in my bookshelf now... I don't know, it's hard to choose.  Skyrim is obviously epic, but PC version blows console out of the water with such a huge broadside I don't really consider it a console game.  Red Dead and COD:MW and Halo and GoW had good multiplayer times.  Say what you will about the COD franchise now, Modern Warfare kicked a lot of ass and was a very influential game.  RDR had an amazing engine, but the story was a bit patchy (total lack of racism and inter-racial violence really jarred me).

So, Ima gonna say, Dragon Age: Origins.  This was the culmination of years of Bioware experience and is the finest mature RPG ever made, IMO.  Though I will never forgive Greg and Ray for selling Bioware to EA, killing off the series before it got started, I'm kind of glad because Origins will stand forever alone as an example of what games can be if produced properly.  Lost Odyssey also amazing, but too much of a FF6 rehash.

What is your game of the generation?  (Except Skyrim, 'cos it's too good).

If you're discounting Skyrim for being better on PC then you definitely can't pick DA:O.

My vote goes towards either Demon Souls or The Last of Us, with Dragon's Dogma and Journey getting honourable mentions.

Metal Gear Solid 4 I still play that regularly and Blazblue Continuum Shift Extend because I play a lot of fighting games and Arc System Works makes some of the best.

Now I'm not entirely certain if this was just because it's fairly recent in my mind, but The Last of Us really stuck with me. Writing, characters, music, gameplay. The whole package. Brilliant.

Console game?  Oh boy.  I never finished Demon's Souls, so my vote has to go towards Dragon's Dogma.

Just wish the stupid thing would come out on PC so I could throw more money at that company.  My honorable mention goes towards Lost Odyssey, Armored Core (pick one), and Samurai Warriors 2.

Well, know what you mean, but Skyrim on the PC is soooo much better it's unbelievable.  Almost all games are better on PC, but TES games are just completely different and better games.

Dragon's Dogma came out of nowhere and was awesome, I'm very excited for the sequel.  Also hope it comes out on PC, but Capcom don't seem to be too motivated on that front.

My favorite console game of this generation has to be Dark Souls. Runners up being Dragon's Dogma and Armored Core V

Honestly? Fallout 3.

The first playthrough was one of the greatest moments of my console-gaming life.

Failing that I go to Oblivion even though it's WAY more awesome on the pc, that first time you leave the sewers is awe-inspiring.

and if those don't strike your fancy I would have to say Lost Planet: Extreme Condition: Colonies Edition, the multiplayer was SO fun, best tdm evar!

Honourable mentions include:
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, we all forget how amazing COD was before it became oversold and blargh.
Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, another ridiculously fun multiplayer game!
LOTR: BFME 2, yep.
Fable, no explanation needed.
Halo 2, for some how being amazing when we all criticized the ending.

EDIT: I dont know if these are too old, but still, awesome.

Viva Pinata and it's sequel, building a garden in those games is so fun and relaxing as long as you don't just plow through the gardening handbook like a checklist to be completed.

Without any doubt in my mind, the best game I've played would be The Last of Us.

If I have to pick a runner-up, it'd be Dragon's Dogma- I sank so many freaking hours into that game. Still need to get the expansion/sequel thing, and a local region copy so I can use the DLC.

Yes plz. So good. I mean, I never finished the game. And it has a lot of crappy elements. But it still has enough quality stuff to it that I think it should be in the honorable mention / top ten section.

I agree on this one too. Such a big game.

I think it was still a pretty mediocre game, even if there weren't six other mediocre games exactly like it yet.

Halo 2
Too old. They weren't even available for the Xbox 360 / PS3!

Bioshock or Dead Space 1.

Admittedly I have played very little of this generation though.

Unfortunately I was not a fan of Fable 2, and Fable 3 introduced a ton of new elements and failed to capitalize on them (THEY FUCKING KILLED MAJOR SWIFT... fuckers).

Halo 3.... was great, but it some how didn't live up to expectations.

So i'll replace those with Dragon Age: Origins and Rainbow Six: Vegas 2 (Because holy shit best cover shooter).
