4d Managing diseases
« on: November 17, 2013, 11:27:49 pm »

aside from bug reports and wish lists...

how can we manage it in it's current form?

I'm assuming that since it's based on a prior modder's contribution, that there must have been some success with halfling's mod prior... although Meph has reduced the headache of managing multiple types of medicines... how has anyone gone successfully treating diseases so far?

I'd like to see advice on various tools, methods, strategies that were incorporated in micro-managing the diseases personally, so I can hope to re-enable the feature (in it's current form)

Thanks.

I just had my starting fort dominated by a flu epidemic. This hit everyone of my 17 dwarves so vomit is everywhere.

I had to spend my meager funds at the first caravan to buy tons of plants to make medicine. Had I know medicine was going to be desperately needed, I would have started an apothecary earlier. By the time I got the plants (and barrels from the barrel shortage) I had most of my dwarves unhappy. The spread of medicine appears to be slowing it, but now I wonder if I should give up brewing for medicine all together.  I started isolating a few dwarves in the hospital with only medicine to drink. I'll probably keep rotating them like that until it appears to die off.

I don't know how to dig my fort fast enough to prevent such early wide-spread infection. I figured my first 2 beds and first two tables was all it took. Maybe I'll keep them spaced out further next time. Will 1-2 titles be enough?  The 3 miners I start with are always shoulder to shoulder too. I have had zero idlers the whole time so not sure what else is putting them close enough to spread the infection.

I see I have one with high blood pressure, and the caravan brought a guard that was skitzo. They had to put him down when he went to attack someone. As I infected the caravan too, I'll have to move the depot to a more isolated place to avoid spreading with future caravans.

I'm sure this isn't needed, but I had a similar experience.  Vomit everywhere... and it sucks that it can't be cleaned outside... I even tried designating pond zones...

I've noticed that the contagious ones seem to go away faster when dwarves are kept moving, probably a consequence of their pathing trying to avoid occupied squares. So I've been creating lots of Meeting Halls spaced far apart so idlers spend more time commuting than mingling and don't bump into each other very often.

Turn them into wrestlers when they catch the plague and laugh as they infect the besieging frosties.

update:
by building beds further away from each other, when dwarf's are resting, they will not infect other dwarfs...

that's a big one.

Why would you want to build beds next to each other in the first place? (and yes, the diseases interaction uses 'touching', which requires a dwarf on a neighbouring tile.

Pre-disease feature, I would make barracks/dormitory bunk rooms space efficient with lines of beds with a single aisle in between. This was previously good enough for starting forts before proper apartments can be dug out.

Now because I can't dig individual rooms immediately, I am now making a couple smaller 5x5 rooms with 4 beds spaced out.  These initial bunks then can become noble rooms later.

I had barracks style beds (not in game barracks, but just the concept of beds being next to each other is similar to military style barracks) all in one room to easily spot cursed creatures and to maximize the # of beds I could put in a room, cross coverage of rooms allowed me to use the same cabinet/chests, etc for multiple dwarfs.

However, with diseases... beds next to each other = catching disease
