World Caught Fire?
« on: November 17, 2013, 10:47:14 am »

So, I was happily mining away, then two migrants came, and two zebras arrived on the map. Next thing I know, the surface is on fire. Now I'm i'm sure it didn't all catch fire at the same time, because I saw the fire spread into some areas, but something started a fire that burnt everything on the top of my map. Strangely, without killing any animals. I have no idea what caused it, the only things on my map besides dwarves and zebras were a colony of Bane Spiders and a single monarch butterfly. All my dwarves were doing was farming and hauling stone, so I don't think I caused the fire. In short, what happened?

Nope, the fire was emanating from a corner of the map my dwarves never entered.

Possibly something picked a fight with a firebird?

Sounds like an infrequent bug that has happened in my mod.  It tends to be most common right after a creature is killed or when a caravan arrives, but is not always near the event in question.  Sometimes it is accompanied by a creature or caravan suddenly accelerating to warp speed.  I have never found the cause.  Posting to see if something similar is happening here.

Any fire events like this are almost always caused by one or more of a few different things. Figuring out what it was isn't always so easy though.

In absolutely no logical order:

Fire-breathing animal or beast feels like having some roast (insert nearby creature here).

One of your dwarves, a new migrant, or a merchant/guard/liaison fire mage shows up, and is frightened by a completely harmless critter.

A merchant, guard, liaison, invader, or I guess rare migrant, who learned some type of secret involving fire or that might cause fire does the same.

Something is up with your RAWs (or just a weird glitch) that allowed some item brought onto the map to be made of a material it shouldn't have, which then went poof and started a fire. (Pretty sure this is what causes the just embarked wagon destruction, and sometimes fire, that shows up on the forums from time to time. Only seen it once myself, and only at embark, so not sure it can even happen later.)

Ordinarily I'd agree with you, if I hadn't seen spontaneous biome combustion occur with my own eyes.  Nothing is there one moment, and the next moment a single tile unrelated to anything catches fire.  Not sure if that's what's happening here (your guesses are the more likely scenario) I'm just saying that there is precedence for this kind of thing.

In absolutely no logical order:

Fire-breathing animal or beast feels like having some roast (insert nearby creature here). None on the map at the time, nor were any ever on it in all likelihood.

One of your dwarves, a new migrant, or a merchant/guard/liaison fire mage shows up, and is frightened by a completely harmless critter. only two useless migrants

A merchant, guard, liaison, invader, or I guess rare migrant, who learned some type of secret involving fire or that might cause fire does the same. unless they were sneaking, no invaders nor guards were nearby.

Something is up with your RAWs (or just a weird glitch) that allowed some item brought onto the map to be made of a material it shouldn't have, which then went poof and started a fire. DF hack did say that it had changed the sizes of some items though, but I don't know how that would cause a fire.

I did reduce the fire mirgants to the 1, the lowest number I can use as pop-ratio... they shouldnt appear anymore. If its really a freak bug accident something, then please use 'weather rain' in the dfhack console. Or tell your dwarves to pray for rain in the Shrine. It will stop surface fires.
