What sort of gameplay are you looking for?

I would say Crusader Kings 2 would be a good bet if you like the political/character wranglings of M&F.

Mount and Blade?
Medieval Lords (pretty meh but sounds like something you're looking for)
Anno series (not exacly "kingdom" but closeish.
Cesar, Pharaoh, Zeus ETC (pretty much everything form the series).
Warrior Kings (more of an RTS but has some original elements to it) since it has things like a central walled city that makes units/gold surrounded by villages that supply food/materials via regular caravans.

Age of Empires?
That's less 'kingdom management' more 'TBS set in the past'

Still fun.  :P

Mount and Blade is a good choice, although be warned the kingdom part is pretty end game. It's also more focused on warfare and domination but amazing nonetheless.

I also long for a kingdom management game. But it seems that nobody has really gone with it yet.

I second King of Dragon Pass, but I don't like the dreamwalking/sacrificial system. It's the closest though.

What particular part of kingdom management? For instance Majesty focuses mostly on kingdom defense, with ai heroes, while KODP has politics and econ and fighting but little real magic, and a everything is kinda abstract. CK2 has a lot of intrigue and combat, but the economy system is embarrassing.

Eh CK2 is more on the intrigue and characters. The combat is generally just "larger army wins", unless there's a marked difference in troops, or a particularly good commander.
Just my opinion anyway.

Maybe a Total War game? Medieval 2? There's a kingdom management aspect, although the focus is more on the battles...

True, the combat itself is meh, because no player could manage all the combats since they run in sync to the rest of the game. Most people don't even know how to set up armies with proper compositions to take advantage of the tactics system. Then again, neither EU4 nor Vicky2 has any sort of solid combat either. You can't actually affect anything. Total War has way better combat. It just loses out on literally anything else.

Can you answer the question of what exactly you are looking for in a kingdom management game?
