Simple Axe Cannot Chop Wood

Why can I not chop wood with a simple stone axe? When I attempt to use advfort to chop some trees, it says that I do not have the right tool, even though I have a simple axe equipped. I realize that I can get wood through the reaction for it, but I want to clear an area for a workshop. What can I do?

It doesn't work because it is a TOOL instead of an actual axe. If there is a spot nearby to make a carpenter's workshop you can get two wood through the reaction, use one to make the workshop and then the other to make a wooden training axe. You can then use that to clear any area you need.
