How Does Stealing Work
« on: November 17, 2013, 10:18:39 am »

Hi guys, I'm pretty new at this game as I just downloaded it for the first time earlier this week and one thing that is confusing me is how stealing works.  More specifically it seems to me that I am able to take whatever I want anywhere I want and nobody seems to care or consider it stealing.  I have taken items in non-store buildings in front of people with no consequences and I have taken what appear to be inventory items (items surrounded by $ symbols) in front of merchants and then left the shop with no consequence.  I have even sold items to a merchant, picked them back up and left with no consequence and in fact if I'm not mistaken I believe I've taken inventory items and sold them right back to the merchant I took them from.  Even after taking inventory items and leaving the area far enough that the game permits me to fast travel doesn't seem to result in any consequences.  Is it supposed to be this way?  Am I missing something?

Edit: Shoot and I just noticed a Gameplay Questions forum exists, let me know if I should have posted this there instead, sorry about that.  Also sorry if this is some sort of re-post that dumb newbies like me post every now and then but I did a forum search and I couldn't turn up anything like this

Well, the question is specific to adventure mode, so it's ok.

I'm not sure on the store stuff, but you can take stuff from the keeps in towns and the dungeons and catacombs without problems. Well, you technically can take stuff from tombs and catacombs without problems, just watch out for the mummies buried there.

This sounds weird... Whenever I try stealing stuff (picking up stuff with $ signs) and leave the store, everyone in the whole civilization seems to want to kill me. Are you playing vanilla or some mod?

I love this community. Somebody asks "hay guise how do i tame shark", and then everybody is like "why don't we fling sharks at things with complex mechanical devices?".

Ok thanks for the reply, so it sounds like you can take anything you want as long as it doesn't have $ symbols around the item name, but in that case I'm still confused about why I'm able to take items from merchants which have $ symbols around the item name with seemingly no repercussions at all from anyone including the merchant himself when I leave and come back

This is completely vanilla, no mods or even re-configuration done to any of the files at all

Have you killed a lot of bandits, kobolds, or creatures of the night? I've noticed that, if you have a good reputation, the civilization is more forgiving than if you're a complete stranger.

Actually no, I haven't killed or attacked anybody in this particular game yet.

I guess I'm just going to assume this particular region or game is bugged or something although whenever I start a new region or game (which I haven't tried yet) if it still exhibits this behavior then that won't explain it.

Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

Well that's the point, I can take $items$ and leave wherever and whenever I want with no repercussions.  If that's not the appropriate behavior than it's either a bug or I'm missing something since I'm still new to the game

From what I recall, stealing items (picking them up and then removing them from their home building) won't cause hostility - instead, you will simply be marked as a Thief and the locals will refuse to talk to you.

It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

Its probably a bug then, since that shouldn't happen. You should be immediately attacked by the dogs and cats on the streets and the merchants the moment you leave the store with your $item$.

Actually, the problem is that theft is broken in version 0.34.11.

In version 0.28.181.40d, picking up an item in a store and then walking out of the store makes you a Criminal within the civ/group (and also a Former Member/Mercenary if you were previously a member/mercenary), at which point talking to anyone in the town makes them respond "Don't talk to me." and immediately end the conversation. Everybody remains peaceful, but it's no longer possible to fast-travel out of the site.

Becoming a criminal in version 0.34.11 (using DFHack) results in exactly the same behavior.
