When I mean very very popular, I mean very very popular, like when I hit "Find Game" it will find a game almost instantly no matter what time it is. I've been looking at Garry's Mod, just don't say Call of Duty: Ghosts.

TF2 is definitely a good one, by virtue of being free and very popular. Counterstrike isn't free, but again, very popular.

Edit: I don't think there's any sort of premium status in TF2?

There's free-to-play then there's premium. Here are the advantages:


Backpack:

Free-to-play: Limited to 50 slots.
Premium: 300 slots (expandable to 2000 with the use of the Backpack Expander tool)

Items:

F2P: Standard
Premium: Standard, Rare and Cosmetic.

Crafting:

F2P: Limited blueprints
Premium: All blueprints

Trading:

F2P: Can receive items and can trade items that have been traded to them
Premium: Can send and receive items.

Also if you want to throw away countless hours, why not try Dota 2? =D

CS1.6 is fairly popular albeit very hard to master.
CS Source is popular and its got a lot of casual servers(IE Anything that doesn't consist of Scrim , PUG's or PUB's.)
CS Global Offensive is probably as popular as Source and its got a matchmaking system if you want to go competitive alongside the ability to join casual servers with lots of gamemodes.

Apparently dota is 10 times more played than the second game on the list.

Fun fact: Yesterday, Dota 2 had more players online than every other game on Steam combined. It was ~650,000 on Dota 2, ~580,000 on everything else. That counts players in single-player games, but not people using Offline Mode.

And it still takes ~1-2 minutes to find a Diretide match.
