Giant Cobra Pet and War Dogs
« on: November 15, 2013, 01:44:41 pm »

Just bought one from the Elven Caravan, is there any way to assign it to a certain dwarf? or does it just randomly get chosen?
also, how do i release it from its cage that it came in?

And, how do i assign war dogs to specific members of my military?

Thanks in advance!

Only war and hunting animals can get assigned to dwarves, but you can set a non-work animal to be put up for adoption in the animal screen, and it may eventually be taken by a dwarf.

To release an animal from a cage, you can either build its cage, then un-assign the cobra from it. Or you can set a pasture for it to be taken to.

To assign war animals, you must (v)iew the dwarf you want to assign the animal to, then open their (p)rofession tab, then press e to assign an animal.

E: If I remember right, there is a glitch where if the owner of a work animal dies, the animal will still retain it's "owned" status, and cannot be re-assigned to another dwarf, but I'm not 100% sure if I'm recalling this correctly.

Animals that aren't trained for war or hunting can only be "adopted" by a dwarf when they've been set to "allowed" for adoption. AFAIK, only dwarfs who have a preference for that specific animal will ever adopt a creature, so chances are slim that this'll happen. You could stick it in a terrarium in some dwarf's bedroom or something, but it wouldn't achieve much.

War animals can be assigned through one of the unit view subscreens, i think it's 'p'references - 'e'; shows a featureless list of trained animals and allows assigning them to the currently-viewed dwarf. This is not very useful, though, because dwarfs gain little benefit from assigned war animals but will take a heavy mood hit when one dies. It's generally better to enable the animal training job on high-profile dwarfs and order them to train a dog or two for war - such animals will often start following their trainer around. Dogs who don't tag along with their trainers can then be pastured or chained in critical locations.

One other thing I've noticed: If you assign a war/hunting animal to a dwarf, then you should hit "g" to go back to the dwarf's general screen before moving to another dwarf and assigning another animal. Otherwise, the next dwarf you select starts off displaying the war animal you just assigned, even though it's not technically assigned to them.

(I don't think this has any effect to the actual act of assigning the animals, but it makes it a bit annoying to try to figure out which military dwarves/hunters/whatever already have an animal assigned, and how many, if you forget to switch off the preferences screen and switch back.)

I had bred giant cobras in a fort some time ago, and I don't think they actually spit poison in anyones eye. Too bad
