World of Warplanes. (World of Tanks but with planes.)
« on: November 15, 2013, 04:20:10 am »

So those interested World of Warplanes has been released.

http://worldofwarplanes.com/

For those who don't know what it is, its a Free to play aircraft fighting game, pretty much the aircraft version of World of tanks.

Get planes go dogfight, get experience get more planes. Starts with Biplanes and ends with early jets. A bit to simple in some points in my opinion but eh.

Tech Trees:
US
USSR☭
Germany
Japan
Britain

Link giving a bit of an explanation of the tech trees and their advantages

Been playing since the end of Alpha. (Which is nice since free planes woot!)
I rather enjoy it though I'm getting to old for the fast paced dogfighting, and I think I'll enjoy World of Warships more when it comes out.  Not enough players though currently, which I'm hoping will improve with time, but still nice starting (Almost anew) in a wargaming game.

Quick rule for this topic as I know it will happen: Please keep Warthunder discussion in the Warthunder topic.

Not interested actually. The hitpoints system and the flight simulation appear to be too unrealistic. Also, no, as far as I've seen, no bombers.

Well they are competing with War Thunder and sadly in this case WoP looks like a cow running on a airstrip next to a jet fighter.
And the hard difference between tiers is just too harsh when compared to WT since in WT when flying in a Tier 4 plane you have a reasonably good chance of killing a tier 6 machine if you land a good shot on it while in WoP you would barely manage to scratch its pain after several seconds of blasting at its tail/engines.

Not exactly fun, actually, more often than not it's rather frustrating since I get killed within seconds but take ages to kill anything myself.

Also they cheated me out of my ten days of premium I was supposed to get for playing me, so they get extra hate for that too.

Unfortunately I'm staying away. I thought it showed promise, early on, I got into one of the early closed tests and had a little fun, but it definitely needed polish, and network issues that caused jumpy and lag filled gameplay forced me away. came back a bit later and the lag was solved, but by then, war thunder had bitten me and everything about WoWp just paled in comparison. Came back a few days ago, and maybe its just me, but despite being a day or so from releasing it felt worse than ever. Controls were sluggish and had to actively be fought against to get any sort of performance from a plane, HP bars were more obvious than ever, and the graphics just plain looked shoddy, no improvement since the earliest days, and despite that, performance on my machine was terrible if there were more than 3 other planes in my vicinity.... Sorry, I still
l love WoT and generally think WG is a pretty decent company as companies go, but they dropped the ball here, and they aren't making any effort to pick it back up.

Regardless of its problems I shall be playing it when I can, definitely worth my time. (At least until world of warships, hnnng)

Only got to around tier 2 last night so I'm definitely not getting anywhere on their little race to the top thing but eh.

Don't know where I want to go really, besides IL-2s on the Russian tree. I was focusing on US carrier based planes in beta but not so sure anymore, they removed the flying pancake from that tree and kinda nerfed my interest in it.

My goals are also the IL series since GAP's are somewhat fun because you don't blow up within seconds, plus it's always rewarding to shake off someone from your tail by dropping a bomb which blows them up.

Other than that I wanted to get the Shinden but that's so far up the tech tree that it's not really worth it, other than that one of the Mustangs would be nice, and a Spitfire too, but that's pretty much it.

Given that most everyone in this thread is saying how WT > WoP, I would suggest giving the other game a try before sinking too much time into it.

In my opinion there is literally no point in playing World of Warplanes. WarThunder is simply better in every aspect, just a list of three quick ones:
1. Starting with controls - in WoP You simply don't have control over your aircraft, You just can choose a direction it can fly to in straight line. It's like WT's mouse driven arcade with no keyboard support. There only point in using a joystick in WoP arcadish gameplay is to be able to do maneuvers, You won't be able to hit anything anyway. Did they finally implemented joystick sensitivity controls in WoP?
2. Damage model - there is no damage model in WoP, just hitpoints and random fires. As someone alredy said You can't do anything to higher tiers unless they are afk.
3. Game modes - guess which game comes with no gamemodes?

The only reason WoP had decent amount of players so they didn't close the project in last few months was ability to farm free premium for WoT.

If You are looking for MMO flight sim try both and remember to uninstal WoP afterwards so it doesn't eat your hard drive space.

Edit: Also think Imma focus fighter-wise primarily on brits, I rather like the way their planes look.

Might not go Germans at all, blasphemous as that sounds, boom and zoom isn't really my forte, honestly, and as much as I am a ME-110 lover they are a bit to hard for me to play, at least from my experiences in beta.

To be fair there IS a damage model.
Its similar to WoT just replace the ammo rack with the pilot but usually the plane will be almost out of hitponts before you damage the part enough for it to matter.

Also, had good match in Bulldog so gonna have tier 3 brit tonight I think, would probably be farther but being lazy.

Before I forget.

Simply put, no. At one point I was going to try Warthunder back when it was closed beta and I got an invite, it was about the time I got into the World of Warplanes alpha, I had both installers sitting in my downloads folder, looked at them and chose World of Warplanes, and deleted the warthunder installer because I simply couldn't be arsed with two similar mp games like that.  Later I might of considered Warthunder again, however it was never worth the effort in my eyes, whenever I had the urge for a mp flight game, I just had WoWP, and hey being wargaming and at least somewhat connected to my World of tanks account, might as well play something that might benefit that. Warthunder may have some nice or better features, but I prefer world of warplanes at this juncture in my life.

(Not to mention that Warthunder players aren't exactly the best advertisers of their game, with their whole "Fuck you if you play world of warplanes, go play warthunder now, moron" attitude instead of a respectful, "Hey if you like this game you should give this game a try sometime, its pretty fun!")

I still play WoT somewhat (at least until the WT armor open beta), but I've played both WT and WoP. There's no comparison to be made: WoP is shit. End of story.

I think its unfair to paint everyone with that brush of hostility towards WoWP players. I think most of us are just saying, "hey, if you like this, why not try this thing we think you'd like better." I personally start on the WoWP side of the argument on this very board at some time in the past. Early on I thought war thunder had a lot of problems and tried to get people to convert to wargaming's entry. But war thunder has done a lot to improve... and warplanes hasn't. Eventually I did a 180 to end up where I am today. I do still love WoT.

I never read anyone talking like that, at least not in these forums. On the other hand i usually play games that i like, i dont play for benefits on other games or extra "somethings" thats why i work. The tank portion of WarThunder is close to beta and it seems silly that you are not even willing to give it a try just becouse of brand loyalty. Everytime people complain about bad release states, always the same modern shooter, shitty DLC, etc. everything just boils down to people being mindles and having a sadening level of brand afiliation. In my eyes, there is no reason to play WoWP over WT becouse it is simply worse and i never heard anyone deny it. Again this is no trying to be agressive or whatever you feel "WT players" do, its just my view on a biger topic.
