10th Limestone - Grevenis

A fearsome creature has come!

This is no time for fighting demonstrations! We need you to demonstrate your fighting on that hulking minotaur over there! I scramble our small military to defend the gate. We will fight the monster with the help of our human allies.

The creature is at the gates!

Onol the Axedwarf faces the beast, with his companions at his side.

Our crossbowmen have been firing since the creature came through the gate, but Zechariah's bolt strikes the creature in the leg as it looms over Onol, bringing the creature down. Soon our soldiers surround the creature.

The creature is extraordinarily resilient, shrugging off repeated mace and axeblows, but Zechariah and Tekkud's bolts ruin the creature. Tekkud eventually finished the minotaur with a deadly iron bolt that pierces the monster's skull. Miraculously, none of our dwarves were injured. I credit Zechariah's quick reactions and deadly aim.

5th Sandstone

The soldiers were happy with the excitement of slaying the minotaur. I just hope that this does not make them overconfident.

Snow comes in the autumn, here. I pity those making final adjustments on the walls topside, and setting up traps.

Feb seems to have some sort of obsession with the giant leopards that are said to live in this part of the world. We've never seen one, but he engraves images of them slaying various humans and elves, claiming these are historical events. I think he is lying.

Zechariah has started a party, to celebrate the defeat of our first real enemy.

Carpenter's log, 22 Limestone:

Maybe I spoke too soon about politics being easy, log <XD>.  I sent a quickly-whittled message back to the MountainHome with the last caravan, asking for some more carpenters to join us.

Together, we can keep pressuring Grevenis and Shem to get us all the logs possible.  We will make this place beautiful - like living in a home made from the ripped-out hearts of the Elves themselves.

Sadly, all logs are still being requisitioned for bedmaking, so I guess I'll have to wait to make this place as wonderful as it can be.  Slow, steady pressure stops the router's bit from breaking, my da used to tell me.  You get a smoother finish with a lighter sanding and patience than you do with a chisel and rage, after all.

In my work at the mechanic's shop, I get to chat with a lot of the masons.  They don't seem to mind the atrocious lack of barrels, buckets, and wooden drums around here.  It's hard to drum up <ha ha ha> support among a bunch of rock jockeys, which is why my brethren carpenters and I have formed the Wooden Order Of Dwarfs With One Real Keen Enduring Request, and published the Demands for a Wooden Arts, Right Forthwith manifesto.

We will have our wood, the boys and me.

Sign me up!  For overseerage.  I expect everyone to die of the vampire flu.  I don't know what that means but it'll happen, mark my words.

Bleaktea? As in, the Bleaktea?!

I did say I knew the guy!

Ah engraving. I made our miners engravers for when there was nothing to dig for awhile. But then a Master Engraver showed up in the first wave. So yeah, waste of embark points. I could have made our miners doctors or something instead!

... a miner doctor! *shudder*

"Nurse! Get me five Urists of coal dust, some cave fungus, and a chalk boulder, stat!"

6th Timber - Grevenis

Autumn is nearly over, and with the month of Timber comes mischief from the unscrupulous woodworkers. One of the miners must be in league with their foul aims...a storeroom has been dug out in the south of the farming floor, and there loggerheads greedily hoard all the wooden furniture...buckets, barrels, beds, nothing is safe from their dendrophilic lust.

It is thankful at least that a true dwarf has little use for an empty barrel, but it is unsettling nonetheless to pass by and hear their strange talk of sanding and sawing. It is well that I have traded for logs and barrels to keep their unseemly appetites sated.

17th Timber

We have been ambushed! A squad of five goblin lashers and their pikeman leader are right outside the gates! Someone pull that lever!

Their cruel and cowardly leader stops to massacre a heroic kitten. The mewling nuisance shall not go unavenged, for it was our mewling nuisance.

Then the whole squad of them proceed to chase down and slaughter the kitten's mother, one of Zon's cats. These monsters will know justice!

...Or perhaps our military thinks it would be more important to grab a drink. Thankfully someone had the presence of mind to pull the lever and shut the gate. The goblins wait, thinking us helpless. Once our military is in position(and suitably tipsy) they shall see otherwise.

19th Timber

A goblin scout was trapped in the walls as the gate closed. Tekkud and Monom, our hammerdwarf, warm up by pounding and piercing him to a pulp.

But what's that over the walls to the north? NO!

Could their timing be any worse? The gate is opened, but its too late, and what's worse, Tekkud and Monom are feeling cocky after beating the lone scout to bloody bits. They feel that this has made them qualified to ignore orders and charge out the gate to face the whole goblin squad.

As the goblins draw near, the pupils leave their eyes. So great is their focus and will to battle, that they have entered a trance. Either that, or Zon has been brewing some immaculate stuff lately.

Tekkud's first bolt is blocked by the whirling whips of the lashers, but the second strikes true, piercing a goblin's lower abdomen.

The Goblin Pikeman rushes forward, screaming in its obscene language. The black sand is dusted with snow. Soon it will be drenched in blood.

Zechariah is almost there as Monom greets the piker in battle. A brutal shot by Tekkud pierces a lasher's cheek and severs its tongue. I wish that he would stop showing off in such a dire situation.

The unscrupulous pikeman rushes right past Monom! We must hope that Tekkud and Zechariah have true aim, or the blood of marksdwarves shall coat the goblin's spear.

There were but 6 goblins there seconds ago, and now their numbers have doubled! Curse them!

Zechariah, Tekkud, and Monom now stand against nearly a dozen dastardly goblins. The caravan guards approach the goblins from behind, but they will be too late to help the bold three who have chosen to fight at the gates. I have called up the other miners, but there is no time to reach them. Their fate is Armok's to decide.

As the cowardly pikeman reaches our brave marksdwarves at the gate, they surgically remove her from the battle with deadly shots that pierce her stomach and chip her legbone. She falls to the ground at the gates.

And brave Monom...well. Bravely dodges several attacks! At least she is keeping them distracted.

Several more bolts leave the pikeman in a bloody vomiting heap at our gates, and our wardogs approach rapidly! Monom is giving a clinic on defensive fighting, having dodged 5 attacks and thrown none. Zechariah sees an oncoming swordsman and gives him a taste of dwarven iron.

Our War Dog, who has been named Snoxxusp, is a mighty creature, but has little mind for tactics. Rather than defending the archers from real threats he wishes to visit more torture upon the already mutilated Pikeman, grabbing its head and shaking it hither and yon. Irritated by Monom's agility, some of the goblins break off to challenge the caravan guards, who approach from the north.

Tekkud has taken careful aim, and fires a mighty shot that pierces the spine of a goblin swordsman. In the heat of battle, he cries to the skies!

"I am an ELITE MARKSDWARF!"

Monom takes pride in the annoyance she has caused, running with the goblins as they head towards the caravan guards.

The goblins are scattered, skirmishing with the caravan guards and our forces.

Urvad, our maceman, made his way into the battle and crushes a goblin swordman with two mighty blows to the head, killing it nearly instantly. The goblins are routed! The fight is ours!

(that was a bit of an update, I suppose! Tekkud shot the same goblin in the tongue TWICE. And Tekkud and Zechariah got no kill credits despite their great shooting. I think Smoxxusp got the kill credit on the goblin pikeman, he was getting torn apart by two war dogs for quite some time.)

Let's check out how our named dwarves are doing in the month following the battle.

AquiziTC:

Notes: Despite AquiziTC's mayoral ambitions, he is only close friends with the original dwarves. He isn't even friends with Zechariah, the militia captain!

His wife Zon is currently the saddest dwarf in the fortress, but is still content. She adopted another kitten prior to the loss of her cat, but is very sad about the loss of her cat to the goblins.

Grevenis:

Notes: Fearless Leader?

4maskwolf:

Notes: A simple man with a simple plan. Mining is his only assigned labor.

Kolnukbyne:

Notes: He is married to the captain of our melee squad, Fikod Honnorchannels, and has a child with her.

Bartantalus:

Notes: One of the most unhappy dwarves in the fort, our hard-working and long-suffering manager. He is used to constant orders of thrones, tables, doors, weapons, cloth, and various other fortress goods.

BleakTea:

Notes: Legendary Stonecrafter, and the source of most of our trade goods.

27 Timber, 2016 -- AquiziTC, Bookkeeper

I haven't seen Grevenis in over a week. I fear he may be dead.
Armok save us if he is lost.

(Sorry for my brief absence, been doing another job and having internet issues x_x. Also, damnit, I always seem to forget something x_x)

20th Moonstone - Grevenis

It's been nearly about a month since the battle, and things have been peaceful. We traded for a great deal of fine goods, including new seeds to add variety to our agriculture. There is also a great deal of wood...in fact, AquiziTC tells me we have almost 100 logs. The drool of woodworkers runs thick in the southern end of the agricultural floor, and despite Woobmonkey's busy work and progress in the field of mechanics, I feel that political pressure may only increase.

I wonder what those damned carpenters would do if I ordered all their precious logs made into charcoal...we do have need of fuel for a potential steel industry. Perhaps there is a compromise in here somewhere.

We've also made a trade agreement with the dwarven diplomat.

The military dwarves have been boisterous and proud, even those who weren't involved in the battle. Truth be told, Fikod was drinking throughout the whole skirmish, but that doesn't stop her from taking credit for the outcome. Truly it was Tekkud, Zechariah, and the little known dwarf Monom who carried the day.

Tekkud, upon the conclusion of the battle, declared that his status as an "elite" marksdwarf(whatever that means) has caused him to change his name. He wishes to be known henceforth as "FireCrazy". I will not deny him this. My tongue fears crossbow bolts.

Amazingly, no dwarves were injured in the battle, but we must remain vigilant. Perhaps the goblins will be cowed, or perhaps they will come again in far greater numbers.

13th Opal

It's amazing how cold it is this time of year. The gates are closed, as there is little reason to be outside at a time like this. I am glad that I have managed the fortress with competence thus far, but I think my overseering days are drawing to a closing. It is hard for a simple miner like myself to manage the doings of 70 dwarves, even with the help of Bartantalus and advice from AquiziTC. Our Fortress has been successful beyond expectations, in part due to the masterful craftsmanship of many of our migrants, such as Domas, Vabok, and Bleaktea.

I'm glad that I've been able to keep our dwarves safe, but for the fortress to thrive and prosper as it could and should, there might be need for another ruler in the future. To be true, I miss mining.

I know I ordered coal and lignite, but it must have been on the wagons that passed by when you closed the gates.

Tough luck.

Hello diary! Missed me? I've missed you! So much has happened recently! Itty bitty beasties have been showing up at the gates, but they were no match for our fabulous military, haha. I kind of feel bad for them, though. Maybe they only came to chat, huh, diary? I wonder what would happen if we tried to talk to them rather than shooting them.  I'll bring it up with Grenvis. Hems my bud, he'll do it.
Speaking of Grenvis, he seems to rather miss his old work. Perhaps he needs a break. After all, the fort can run itself, my grandpa used to say. At least I think he said that. This memory of mine, diary!
Well, more mining needs done. See you later, diary!

Carpenter's log, 18 Moonstone:

It's winter, log. <hahah>  There's so much going on these days, here in Torchbridge!

First, and most important: we're finally supplied with wood.  Not enough for comfort, but some at least.  Well done, brethren!

However, we must not get too cozy with the situation.  There are rumours that Grevenis (swell chap; did I mention he loves to party?) is talking about <gasp> burning our precious wood?  Let the smiths use coal, I say!  That wood is for the glorious arts of our carpentry crew!

Oh, I heard something about goblins coming to visit.  Never got to meet any; pity that.  Maybe next time I'll invite a few in for a pint o' the best.

Mechanism after mechanism, I've been busy; however, all I can think about is the beautiful piccolos, drums, and figurines I could be a-whittlin' out of all those ready stacks of lumber.  But NO, says Grevenis.  Only for BEDS, says Grevenis.

The boys are starting to say he's... sober, or something.  This will not do.  Come spring, the whispers in the halls tell me, there's gonna be some kind of changes in the upper muckety-mucks.  I hope they're not too hard on ol' Grev - unless what I hear about burning our precious wood turns out to be true, that is.

For now, though, log, things are peaceful.  Oops, this knife is dulling, and I need a beer.  'Til next time!

Grevenis, I don't wanna be -that- kinda guy, but do you think you could just wrap this up either tonight or early tomorrow? A week is about as long as I wanna see one Overseer hold the fort so we keep things moving.

(Indeed, I'm sorry my turn took so long x_x)

28th Obsidian, 2016

This month has been a quiet one, for the overseer, and I've decided that it shall be my last. The growing needs of the fortress are beyond the simple mind of a miner.

In this month, Bleaktea began acting strangely.

After gathering a great multitude of materials for over a week, she began a bizarre construction, the likes of which I have never seen. It was completed in a few days' time.

Other than that, me and the boys have started mining out further on the great open floor beneath the hardcrafts level, hoping to find gems for our jewelers, and replenish our supply of limonite.

I feel that I have performed adequately in my role of overseer, and at the very least kept the fortress safe from outside dangers that threatened our safety. Torchbridge is now a thriving fortress of 73 dwarves, including 8 children. Our supplies are all stable, but industries could be greatly expanded. On the eve of the new year, I call as much of the fortress as I can into our grand dining hall. I declare that I shall abdicate my role as Overseer to a dwarf chosen by the fortress at large. I leave it to them to ponder over their preference of overseer, and head down the stairs to mine some stone. To a proper dwarf, this is to be at peace.

(Sorry that my turn took a lot longer than expected.
