That's true actually, the beginning and ending were fine.  It's just the threat was really poorly set up - we were mostly just told about it.  "The doctor is stuck in a siege situation and uses up his time on it" isn't actually a bad idea at all, but it was very poorly executed.  And then the resolution is just ugh.

I think the resolution would have been more palatable if we had seen what was happening on Gallifrey.  Some kind of council meeting, maybe with the 'mother' figure from Tennant's final episodes defying them in order to help the Doctor.

Yeah. As usual with Moffat's stories I found it to be good on an emotional level but generally lacking in sound storytelling.

Of course, Capaldi's performance could still have been improved with a few additions...

A new series is in progress!  Time for this thread to regenerate!

We've had eight episodes so far, and Capaldi has been quite a departure from the flashy and affable Tennant and Smith eras.  His Doctor is often cold, callous and overly blunt.  He kindof comes across as The Doctor laid bare - he admits when he isn't sure what's going on, for instance.  This has been rather divisive, but I've enjoyed it.

There have certainly been flaws (such as mostly quite weak monsters), but overall I'd say this is a good season.  There have been some new and interesting ideas on display (especially in Listen, the super low-budget episode for this series) and they also seem to have finally sworn off using the sonic screwdriver as the solution to everything.

What does everyone else think about Capaldi and the series so far?

I definitely like Capaldi, he's a very good Doctor. As always, I think Clara's character is a bit bland, but she is improving as it progresses. The entire series is getting a bit dour and morbid, but still entertaining and inventive, I just hope it gets back a bit of the old fun from the Doctors past to balance out the downers.

I like capaldi. not as much as david tennant, but he's slowly getting there. he still feels like he would fit more as a Dr Who arch nemesis than the actual Doctor, but i am getting used to him. btw, anyone else gets the occasional Back to the future's Doc vibe from him?

I also like this bit on his filmography:
2013 - World War Z - W.H.O. Doctor

I liked "Listen":

Maybe its because of my extremely childish humor, but "Robots of Sherwood" is the episode i enjoyed most so far. so much that i think the doctor should have dumped clara and picked robin hood as his companion instead.

Eh, I didn't like the Listen one. It ended horribly.

So uh, the first half of the season finale just happened.

Minor spoiler: Danny dies.

Larger-but-still-easy-to-foresee spoiler: The skeletons are cybermen with invisible exoskeletons.

Largest spoiler: "Missy" stands for "Mistress", and in case that there was ever any doubt that the Master was flirting with the Doctor, she snogs him.

Say whaaaaaat.

Yea, good episode, though I will admit to being slightly confused.

The big twist is not hugely unexpected, but it was revealed pretty well and they did a decent misdirection job on the preview.

Yeah I liked Listen too, and a lot of it is to do with the answer to that question.

Who was this Katie woman, anyone mind telling me? Who was her father?

For some reason, I can't remember either of them.
