Turn should be up tomorrow. I apologize for the abnormal delay; school has been throwing homework at me incessantly and my brain has been feeling somewhat addled. I will also address some new things that will be coming up soon with the next turn and beyond.

Thank you for your patience and understanding, and I hope that I am being, at the very least, present in my notifications and words.

Yours truly,
Artemis.

TURN THIRTY-NINE: LIVING HISTORY [END CHAPTER FOUR]

So, a couple of things to note before I write this up:

1. I've dug through all of the old turns and compiled a good stack of information that should help me to reference prior topics with greater ease. I'm going to do a quick check to make sure I didn't miss anything. After that, I will post a second intermission detailing some of the data that I've been able to dig back up. Hopefully, this will help to make some things more readily accessible for all of us.

2. It is inevitable that with all RtD projects, you will have some people who fall out of the loop or are blockaded by life events. However, this does not mean that any of those people have been forgotten in the storyline. Just like the active people, the inactive ones are also going through different autoactions at the same time, for now. However, the further I go along with this, I feel like I might be getting out of sync with some of these characters. After the second Intermission is posted, I will send out messages to the people who have not posted in a while, to see if they may be interested in continuing along or if they want their characters to drop out. I completely understand if either of the two options occurs, but I just want to have confirmation on whether or not those people are available. As for those who are prevented from posting by a snafu in life, I will also keep their characters in the current of The Medium.

That's pretty much all for my note. Expect the second Intermission soon. I hope you all have a fantastic week!

This turn will be a bit shorter to allow for higher frequency. Yes, I know I keep saying that over and over again, but I will make sure of it this time, I promise!

(Who am I kidding, it's impossible for me to resist writing a few extra words to complete the context of the story.)

Yours truly,
Artemis.

Lirian, Medium of Sword and Shadow

Same as how I ignored her question about my delay getting here, I ignore her whilst she is pitching a temper tantrum.
She'll get over it.
Until she calms down and gives me answers, I spend my time productively, getting some practice in at shadowstepping. If my injury transfered over to this world, then I aim for precision stepping, using smaller and smaller shadows, and using my own shadow. If it didn't transfer, then I practice stepping quickly, attempting to get fast enough at it that I can incorporate it smoothly into my bladework, appearing and disappearing around my target from all directions.
"So, ready to give me answers yet?"
Lirian
There's not much that you can do for her right now that would really help in her state of emotional distress. Instead, you decide that practicing your abilities would be a much better use of your precious time here, before you are jolted back to life in the real world. Or, who knows, maybe you died somehow and are stuck here forever. Whatever the cause for your arrival may be, you still have a job to do now.

While Danielle goes through her own motions, you move over to the forest to begin practicing with the shadows and your abilities. You notice that whatever injuries you may have sustained don't appear to have transferred to this world, so you should be fine on that end. As you enter the edge of the forest, you also notice that the sky seems to be rippling with dark overtones. It would seem that Danielle's tantrum is disturbing this world. You put that in the back of your mind for now and step forward into the shadow of a large tree, feeling the eerie rush come back to your head. Stepping into and out of the shadows gives you a slight chill and a feeling that seems to be both debilitating and exhilarating, putting you in an uncomfortable place. You assume, however, that this feeling is only because this power is new to you. With time, you should be able to accustom yourself with this strange new field of power.

Your soul has grown in power. You are now the Medium of Sword and Shadow II!

After spending a nice while stepping in and out of the shadows, increasing your speed and your reflexive ability, you decide to give yourself a break before you exhaust your mental ability to focus on the shadows. You still don't know what you could come upon once (and if) you wake up again. Returning to the meadow, you find Danielle again. She has produced a woven-fiber table and has downed about four soft drinks, the remaining evidence being four aluminum cans lying on the ground next to the table. You can see that she has another soft drink in her hand right now, which she periodically takes a gulp from in between her paces. You stand with your arms crossed and ask her if she is ready to answer you yet.

She downs the rest of the can before tossing it next to the other cans, landing with a clink. She takes a few breaths before wiping her mouth and saying, "This is all kinds of screwy, dammit. I have no idea what's real or not anymore." She moves to one of the chairs that she spawned before and falls back into it, slumping down. "What's your question again? Something about the shadows, I think?"

Board a bus to the orphanage.
((I caught your action the first time, no need to worry. You're good!))

Jack Weasly
For now, you would like to not arouse the suspicion of anyone else inside of the mines. At the very least, going back to the orphanage means that you would be back in good company with people who are not constantly watching over you. Yes, you're still not completely safe, but it's good enough for the moment. Eager to get out of the mines, you wait until the signal is given and then begin packing your equipment away.

With Aneita and the other Jack, you make your way to the surface of the mine and stand in a fenced-in area, where several guard posts watch over the arrival and departure of different buses. You watch as people of a wide range of ages filter out of the mines and into the buses, which take them in the direction of the city past the mountains. After several more minutes, the bus for the younger echelon of workers arrives, which the three of you board.

The bus itself is painted with a faded gray finish, itself being a portrait of the dull routine that you go through every day. It's somewhat narrow, but there's not many people on shift today, so you have enough room to sit by yourself on the right side. The seats are uncomfortable and only covered with a thin fabric, and the windows are dirty and foggy, possibly because of the colder weather. You lean against the windowsill and watch the mountains go by as you return to the orphanage.

About half an hour later, you arrive at the walled-off town which serves as your home. After passing through a checkpoint, it takes a minute more before the bus arrives at the orphanage. It's a three-story building with a faded peach facade. You know the place well; after all, you have been living here for most of your life now. The three of you and some of the other children move into the building in order check in to the orphanage.

Just order the golems to make a creator golems for every 9 basic they make.
Rune
((I'm going to hold off stat return for this round due to the information dump that will be coming soon. Rolls for creation of the golems will still be done.))

Spoiler: Rolls (click to show/hide)

With your Creator golems now in full play, it's time for you to start pumping out the golems. You're not sure how many of these little guys you can control at once, but it's still good to have the resources built up in case you need them later. At the very least, you will be able to push your own limits and give yourself room to practice later when you need it. It will all smooth itself out in due time.

Your Creator golems line up in an orderly fashion, grabbing chunks of clay and using their gigantic hands to mold the clay into the shape that you ask of them. Soon, each of the Creator golems is working along well, with three of the clay models already done and with more on the way.

After working for a fair amount of time with these golems, it seems as if it is getting easier and easier for you to manage multiple of these golems at the same time. You have no doubt that once this new batch of golems is done, you'll be more easily able to control groups of them at once.

Your soul has grown in power. You are now the Guardian of Clay II and Mind II!

Alex would make a small smirk.
wait to be taken to the medical center.
Alex Raman
You comply with the dutiful officers, liking the way that this is going. If this goes along smoothly, you won't have to fight that much to escape, especially in a medical area. You expect that the guards will be watching you anyways, but at least you will be at more of a liberty to escape this time.

The guards pull you along by your arms and lead you down a short walk to the medical center.Compared to the jail that you just inhabited, it seems to be rather tidy and well-managed. The guards lead you through a half-metal, half-glass door and bring you through to one of the  medical staff there.
"My goodness," the rather old doctor states. "Well, we have to have this cleaned up soon before any possible infection sets in. How long has he had this wound?"

"Just a few minutes, it hasn't be that long," one of the guards replies. "My partner here will be accompanying you, so as to make sure that your patient doesn't try to escape. He's currently in the custody of the police."

The doctor nods and motions for you and the guard to follow him. "I understand. Well, come along then." The three of you pass through another door into a lit corridor, where you turn to the left and arrive at a small treatment room. The whole room is painted white, with cabinets lining the walls and a sink with soap on the right side of the room. In the center is a comfortable-looking chair, which you sit down at. The guard stands at the door while the doctor begins to look at your wound.

There are some sharp instruments near the sink, but you don't think you'd be able to get there fast enough before the guard catches you. You reckon that there might be some supplies in the cabinets that you could use to your advantage, if your instincts would serve you right...

So be it, I will go ahead and give the letter to that lady. Bid goodbye to the interesting people I met
"I thank you all for the drink. It was rather nice meeting you all. I hope your journey bids you well; I will make sure that this letter is delivered accordingly." You say your goodbyes to the group of associates and stand up, shaking hands with them all before beginning to leave.

Ms. Walker smiles and shakes your hand, holding her folder close to her. "I wish you a good day, Professor Schrodinger. I hope you know you're helping greatly to forward the communications between the mainland and this island. Thank you." You study her eyes closely, noticing that there is an odd spark of excitement in her eyes. She might just be delighted that you are able to deliver the letter, but you still get an uncomfortable feeling in your stomach. It's something of an irrational thought that so often pervades your mind at night. Nevertheless, you nod to the group and make your way out of the bar, looking to see what this letter is all about once you deliver it.

It is now the afternoon. Delivering the letter is not completely necessary right now, but you can go ahead and deliver promptly if you wish. Other than that, you may visit the town's library, meet some of your students at Anders' Courtyard, or watch some of the local sporting events at the University's recreational center. You may also relax in your bedroom, return to the bar, visit another restaurant, or explore a new part of the town.

Continue along the river opportunistically eating or gathering edible vegetation I come across.
Jonathan Eridis
You hum along quietly as you trek along the unsteady terrain that the river follows. It's quite calming to listen to the slow flow of the river as the water passes by you, making its own song of natural joy. The thick vegetation below you and the tall trees help to improve the look of the environment around you. Overall, it's quite peaceful, with the light rain helping to keep you cool in the warm summer days. There is nothing that you could ask for that would be better to accompany you during this trip than this melody of nature that encompasses you.

An hour or  so passes by before you come across some familiar-looking plants, which you believe to hold some berries which are safe to eat. Picking one of the berries from one of the bushes, you find that it is a vibrant purple, with the other berries sharing the same range of color and intensity. You remember eating these when you were younger, and thus judge them to be safe. You pick some more of these berries from the bushes and carry them along with you, eating them periodically along with your other food. The taste of the berries, bitter when broken but very sweet when ingested, reminds you of when you were first lost in the forest. It was a taste that reminded you that the beginning of your journey wouldn't be enjoyable, but it was certain to be sweet in the end.

That was what you clung to before, and now you will use that as your motivation to move forward now.

You haven't encountered much else that is new along the way down the river. The terrain still slopes downwards, hopefully leading soon to a human town that you may get directions from. Occasionally, you see a small animal or bird come across your path, reminding you that you are not totally alone here. With your footsteps matching the drone of the forest, you forge ahead, wary of the dangers that could come ahead.

Warren Drake

"You wouldn't by any chance have heard of anything called a shadow, would you? I mean, not the kind that's cast by a thing, but more of a malevolent thingy with highly unclear motives and such."

Interview girl. Be gentle.
Warren Drake
You watch the trees, looking for anything that may lurk beyond the darkness of the night. With the appearance of this small creature which, presumably, attacked the girl, you have to be ready for anything that may show up now. You're not sure if you can do whatever you did earlier by summoning some freakish dinosaurs out of the blue, but if you could, that would be definitely helpful in the case of an attack.

Or, who knows, maybe the dinosaurs will decide that you are a much tastier meal than the freaks of nature that roam this region of the world. That reminds you: where the heck is Darzenis? You haven't heard from that fried-brain lizard for quite some time now. Even if he is a bit annoying, you're grateful that he's able to provide some sort of help in a pinch. Hey, maybe he could even give some advice on the situation.

Oh, was there a conversation going on? Sorry, I got lost in the muse. I- I mean you, you got lost in the muse. Yeah..

"S-shadows?" Her tone indicates that she is surprised by that word, not understanding what you mean by  "malevolent" and "shadows."
"I m-mean, I think I read a book about something like that a while ago.. but I didn't think that it was real. A-are you saying that those monsters... they're.. 'shadows?' What.. what do these shadows do? And... w-why are they here?" The questions start coming as she becomes more and more curious about what you brought up. It looks like you're no longer the interviewer but the one being interviewed.

Relay my current mythical knowledge to the Empress.
Eh Ah

Ms. Theyin puts her elbows on the desk and cups her face with her hands, making her look much more juvenile than her title would have you believe. After you're finished talking, she leans back and raises an eyebrow, saying, "I find it hard to believe that Apollo would be involved with sorcery. Yeah, of course he has some charismatic aura flowing around him, but.. I can't believe that the lightning actually happened. It was just a trick of the light, wasn't it? I wouldn't be surprised if he carried his own weapon on him, and I find it hard to believe that the lightning didn't affect anyone else. It just doesn't make sense. He doesn't make sense. None of this does.

"Still... something is off about Devicus. He's got some sort of... intensity to him. There's no real way to explain it, but I feel like there is something more to him that I can't figure out yet. I can't get close to him now, though, considering he left me on this island as some sort of stupid timeout. I'm the Empress, dammit, he doesn't have authority over me!"
She stands up, filled with energy, but then relinquishes her anger once again. She falls back into her chair and rests her head on her right hand, sighing.

"Still, I will entertain the idea that he has some sort of power that transcends this reality. That would explain some of the mystical events that have been occurring in the past few days, and maybe even tie in to some of my dreams. Is there any other sort of information that you acquired from the townsfolk? Anything that you think would help piece together what I know about this island?"

You're somewhat glad to see that she is willing to listen to you, despite her consistent attitude problem. At the same time, her power of authority, however much it is decreasing, will allow you to also figure out what's going on now. Maybe you will be able to restore some sort of stability on the island after the Empress comes to her senses. All you have to do is keep the Empress under good terms, and help her to go through the motions of realization.

This is just as much of your journey as it is hers.

Mulling it over, Cecil asks a few more questions.

"So, what's next? What happens after tonight?"
Cecil G. Palmer
She giggles with a condescending tone, as if she knows much more than you and you can't do anything about it. Well, with the situation right now, you don't think you could actually do anything. Still, that does not relieve any tension you are feeling right now.
She motions with her hand and hundreds of fireflies emerge from the ground around, lifting into the air and creating a column of light around the two of you. The column glows with a soft aqua color, the fireflies moving soundlessly. The only sound you can discern is the soft tinkling of something like a glass chime.

"Oh, what does happen after tonight?" She giggles even more, which annoys you mildly. You're getting tired of her repetition of your questions, as if she expects you to find all the answers. Even if that's what she's getting at, it makes the annoyance no less intense. You cross your arms to show that you're expecting an actual answer soon. Of course, you hold no power here, but maybe she'll listen to you this time. Well, you hope so.

She stops laughing and opens her eyes, her irises cheerful and literally glowing with a blue-aqua tone. "Oh, where are my manners? I'm so sorry, child, I am forgetting the gravity of your situation. Please, forgive me. Now then...

"I cannot tell you all too much about the future. What I may tell you, however, is that you may expect another night like this to occur more often. From one night to two and four and sixteen and more. The voices in your head - the thoughts of humanity - will be your guides. You are a child of Fortune. Trust in the signs of the world and process your reality and your dreams. You will meet people like you, who have the ability to interpret mind, matter, dreams, and nightmares. People who are the connections between different dimensions and worlds. People who protect all that you know and hold dear in the universe.

"The chaos will continue, for now. What you must do is find the patterns that lie within the madness. Look for those living beings who see what you see, and connect with them. That is what you must do to survive these nights."
She waves her hand and the fireflies above you disappear completely, leaving the area only illuminated by a faint glow coming from the floor beneath you. She clears her throat and folds her hands in front of her, seeming regal in her silk robes and with her near-golden hair.

"You must be wondering how you got here. I cannot promise that it will be easy coming back, but I do not doubt that you and I will meet again - that is, if you live through the next few weeks. Is there anything else you wish to know before you must... leave?" She smiles warmly and tilts her head slightly to the right. The glow of the floor flickers, as if it is losing power. Something tells you that you won't be here for much longer, so you must make good use of your last question.

Spoiler: Narrator's Post (click to show/hide)
Eleri

Alright, viscosity. It may be thicker than water given its opaque nature...or is that the property of the liquid itself? To appear black? No, not really. Water is transparent yet reflective when a substance inside it is-...

Eleri was deep in thought as she stared into the waves of the sea: a dark, grey to black landscape outlined the ocean, and in the darklight, the only guide was the moon shimmering above the waves. She could see the foam crest and rise with each passing roll of the sea, and the repeat was a calming rhythm to her as her thoughts returned to the rocks.

"Fire," she said. The boy needed fire, and given the bed of leaves he was on (and granted, away from any annoying ants or pests of the ground), the thought would do wonders for his health...only that she'd need a big enough fire or a very enclosed space to waft the heated air onto him. She looked around, and her supplies was limited enough--if only she could find a better structure to purpose convection for a more insulated area...

Eleri looked over the boy, brushing away a bit of her hair in the process, noting down that tidiness was a blessing. His clothes were quite alright, for a stranger. Though she wondered what gave him that hair color; blue was a very strange color indeed, and she was quite aware of the natural hair tones that humans had, along with their complexions.

A note of sadness echoed in her, reminder her of her...own physical condition. Maybe he's an outcast, she wondered. Though it would be weird to cast away a person because of his...hair color. It could even be a dye as a fashion stance, though it looked and felt very natural to her.

She sighed: this was a matter to deal with tomorrow, and her thoughts were not as vigorous and full of energy as when she was young and in her studies. She did wonder, however, if there was any tangible limit to the energy of thought, until she felt herself nod off in a monotone drawling over the mechanics of muscles and energy generation.

Blinking away sleep, and feeling the very familiar tingle all across her body to stay awake, she tucked up her knees and hugged them close, slumping against a wall facing the boy. Whatever feelings she had about humanity and her isolation were discarded to the side as she appraised him once again.
"You've said little, and yet I feel like you've told me a tome. I'll...see you in the morning, okay? Right." She trailed off and looked away at the last word, sighing as she shivered a bit in the cool, night sea breeze. Brushing a hand over the fur of her ears, and holding her tail in the other, she wrapped it around her body as best as she could.

"Just...don't hurt me when you wake up. Please."

Slumber! Also arrange a ring of rocks with a small depression for a tiny fireplace, and try to get it working in between me and him...before sleeping, of course.
Try to think of all the good that happened today, before sleeping.

Eleri
The warmth of a fire will definitely make the night easier for the two of you. Unfortunately, you're not sure if you will be able to start the fire properly. In the nights prior, it was more of a priority for you to gather more food and explore the surrounding area to acclimate yourself to this strange, new place. The mild temperature is bearable due to the calmer nights without strong waves or winds, which helps to keep you fine for the moment. However, with a guest who is heavily wounded, you're not sure if he'll be able to take the lack of warmth as well as you have. The benefit of setting up a fireplace, then, would be twofold. The challenge is with getting the fire set up before the night grows too long.

Thankfully, luck seems to be on your side. It's easy enough to find appropriately-sized rocks that  would serve the purpose to build a fireplace. You retrieve the wood and the kindling that you collected from earlier and move them into circle of rocks that you have built in the center of the lonely building.  The only task left is to light the fire, which might prove to be the most challenging task by far. The first thing that you could try is using the knife with something that might substitute for flint - maybe quartzite, if it's available? You move out of the building and look  near the forest for either flint or quartzite. Hopefully, either one may serve the purpose to give you the spark you need for the fire. You grasp in the dark at the ground, looking at different rocks and becoming more and more disappointed. Finally, you get on the verge of giving up before finding just what you needed - a small piece of quartzite. It probably won't survive more than one or two uses, but it should be all you need for tonight.

You crouch down near the fireplace and draw out the knife. You close your eyes and mutter under your breath, hoping that this will work. You set the knife against the quartzite and strike the rock. Nothing comes from the rock, however, which makes you uncertain about the quartzite. You strike it again to no avail. Once more, you draw the knife against the rock, and a couple of sparks fly from the quartzite, landing in the kindling. You watch as the kindling develops a small flame which spreads to the rest of the material. It is very slow-moving and not very bright, but you have hope that it will grow large during the night. You should have enough firewood to make it last for an hour or maybe two. You reckon that it should give enough warmth to comfort the two of you until the morning arrives.

Having completed the fire, you slump against the wall and bring your knees close to your body. The day has been rough, but maybe you will find some peaceful rest during the night. In the morning, assuming that nothing malicious transpires in the darkness, you will be able to bring the boy to the town and get him proper medical attention. For now, though, it's time to get some rest...
..
.

Go, go now! You have to make it to the #k*%l#!

You feel a heat all around you and can barely see through the thick, dark smoke. You acknowledge the sound of explosions and yelling, screaming and howling all around you. Through the smoke, there is occasionally a flash of vibrant light, sometimes red or blue or green or yellow or any color you can think of. You can also see streaks of black flying through the smoke, though you can't make out any shapes. The voices that you hear are barely cognizable, and the mentioning of certain names or places is blotted out by a white noise.

Third guard, hold the shields up and get the wounded out of here! Second guard, keep the @i#O!2kS away from us! Zero guard... let's move.

This new voice begins with clarity and confidence, but begins to falter at the end of the sentence. The flashes in the distance increase in both frequency and intensity, providing an odd light show in the dark. More high-pitched screams and howls are heard, though they do not sound very human.

*mF&†, you're pushing it too far! Fall back with the others, we can't survive this! We can always try-

More flashes and explosions occur in your surroundings. You can hear someone shouting back.

No! We can't try again, this is our.. our last shot!

All of the sounds and the visions begin fading out. There is only one more voice you hear before the scene fades completely, with a sorrowful laugh accompanying it.

Don't worry. We built this together for a reason. I'll make sure that it survives. I'll make sure that we all survive. We're almost where... And then, darkness... but the voice continues to echo for some unknown reason. Where...
Where...
Where...

"Where.. am I? W-what... ah.. what happened?"
You open your eyes, unsure if this is a continuation of your dream/nightmare or if you're actually awake. The light pouring in from the doorway indicates that you're back in your small shelter. However, you find that the boy is now awake and feeling around the room with his eyes closed. You're not sure if he's still sleeping and moving in his dreams, or if he's actually awake. It would be best to check his wounds and make sure that he is still sound.

Author's Note: Okay, I admit, that was a lot longer that I promised, especially with Eleri's part. I guess you could consider this a preface to Chapter Five :D. Also, the infodump will be coming sometime in the next week, hopefully midway to the next update. I will be sending messages to people regarding the status of the turns.

Have a fantastic week and I hope you enjoy the update,
Artemis.

So, she doesn't understand lies.
"Either one is a disguise, someone similar, or an illusion, both are, he split, there always was more than one of him, he is teleporting very quickly, he truly can be in two places at once, or he is traveling through time. Learn to accept that things aren't always what they seem. What is, Is. You know you are real, so start from there and work outwards to determine what must be real, what is probably real, what probably isn't real, what is fake, and what must be real or fake, because if it is the other then it doesn't matter anymore. I am real because if I'm not then nothing matters anyway."
or her memory is modified, but i'm not going to bring that possibility up
after I give her a chance to respond and calm down:
"What do you know about Artemis and the Shadows?"

"I have no idea. You know what a demon is? I think a shadow's like an off-brand version of that. Maybe with a dash of the darkness within all of us. But who knows? Any hints I have on the matter are so uselessly cryptic at the moment, I can't even begin to guess how any of this can make sense. And I don't see my confusion decreasing."

"Anyhow, you got a calendar around here or something? Or know any inhabited places around here, or are you the only person alive around these parts?"

Eh Ah

"I... don't think we are at the point when being skeptical about the presence of sorcery is reasonable. Apollo Devicus is involved, I think, and it is entirely possible that his involvement was not particularly willing, either. He may be a part of some greater sinister plan."

"As for other knowledge, I discovered a sort of creation myth about four oddly-named mythical creatures shaping the world. They were named after gaudy, not very natural colors that no Atisi tribesman could be expected to know, such as emerald or aqua, which may point to the tale being a conspicuous modern fabrication, and one was even called a vibria, which is apparently a fancy name for a wyvern. It did not sound quite pertinent, though it did mention Atis being the center of the world, darkness being sealed inside the volcano and there being a time when their "successors" will go and fight something or other to ensure the existence of the world. All in all, rather nonspecific, though the names of the four original creatures - the aqua dragonfly, the crimson vibria, the golden sparrow and the emerald crow - seem a bit suspicious, though whether in the sense of making me suspect that the tale is hogwash or making me suspect that there is something deeply odd at play with the myths of the Atisi, I cannot quite say. As I said, normally it would be fairly clear that the story's been considerably altered due to its flowery nature, but now, with the rather obvious sorcery at play on the island, the second alternative is starting to seem considerably more likely."

After you finish, she blinks twice, showing no emotion on her face. She puts her arms in front of her and shakes her head, saying, "'kay, I get it, I get it. No need to pull an Artemis on me." As soon as she mentions that name, you notice the slightest ripple in the sky, as if something was disturbed by that name. She snaps out of her gaze and looks up with a worried expression. "Flip, shouldn't have said that. Look, if you're gonna refer to him again in this realm, please call him the 'Twilight Prince,' or the 'purple dude,' or 'Amethyst,' or whatever. I don't care, just... don't call him by his actual name. It's not just chicken talk either; I think that someone is looking for us - I mean, this place, specifically. So just.. don't bring his name up."

You find this tidbit of information odd, but you decide to go ahead and ask your question now.
"What do you know about him and the Shadows?" you ask, minding your wording.

She sighs and waves her right hand. "Ya wanna take a seat? This is gonna be a while." With that, she begins to explain what she knows so far.

"Mmkay. Well, the Twilight Prince.. he's an odd case, for sure. I definitely didn't expect him to be here, and it frightens me because of the context of his... arrival. I think I told you about the different Generations of Guardians already, didn't I? Well, if not, the Guardians have been interacting through the help of the Mediums for a while now. Don't ask me how this 'Medium' baloney works, it just does. The Generations extend back for about four worlds, not including this one. I was in the third world. The Twilight Prince, destroyer of worlds and resident prick, is believed to be the first Guardian of our adventure. Or zeroth Guardian, depending on how you wanna slice it.

"This is significant because of his power. Normally, Guardians only maintain a certain amount of power during their whole life, and can only gain or lose power if they kill other Guardians, connect to other Guardians through a Medium, or if they are killed themselves. The Twilight Prince, the bastard he was, had a special condition: he was the alter-ego of the first Medium, which meant he was essentially a Medium himself. As long as he kept the first Medium, the Dragonfly, under his control, he basically was the most powerful Guardian who ever lived. He could destroy towns and cities and countries in a heartbeat. He could the flow of time, which was his power, I think. He wanted to bend the universe to his will under some self-righteous banner that he waved. He wanted to be a Medium and more.

"But honestly... I can't say whether or not his intentions were honest or not. As we moved through the worlds and, um, certain things happened, the mixture of lies and truths was too smooth. We couldn't really figure out who was on who's side. At the very least, I know that the Twilight Prince was loyal to - or at least tolerant of - the first Medium, the Dragonfly. Other than that, I can't really say what he wanted. All I know was that he was chaotic, and very much so. No one can control him, not even the gods.

"But... there's two things that make me uncomfortable. The first is that, if what I'm hearing is correct, there are two different versions of the Prince on this world: the young kid version of him, and the normal teenage/young-adult version of him. I wanna know why two versions of him are existing at the same freaking time. The other thing is that... well..

"I don't wanna believe it, but.. if the Twilight Prince is alive and kicking, and this is not just a fantasy.. there might be a sliver of a chance that somewhere, somehow, the Dragonfly is still alive. I'm not saying we'll ever get him back, but... the Dragonfly just might be alive in some god-forsaken place. At the very least, his soul might still be intact. This isn't for sure though. I don't.. I don't even know where to begin with the Twilight Prince's shenanigans."
She sighs again and looks at you with tired eyes.

"So, any questions? Any existential statements? Anything at all before we get to the spooky creatures of the night?"

"Anyhow, you got a calendar around here or something? Or know any inhabited places around here, or are you the only person alive around these parts?"

She stares at you intently, her sadness temporarily whited out by her newfound curiosity. "Ohh, I think I get it, erm, a bit," she replies simply. "I-I'm so sorry to have disturbed you.. I'll try to help where I can, but I don't know much about those things myself." She sits in a cris-cross applesauce fashion and wraps her arms around her own body in what seems to be a self-comforting posture. You ask her if she has a calendar with her or if she knows about any settlements near this odd, grounded treehouse.

"Um, I have a calendar, but it might be a bit old, I think. It's buried under a pile of books somewhere. Y-you can have it, b-but I don't think it'll be m-much use to you. Also, I think that there's some kind of human grounds in that direction," she says while point to the left with a straight arm, "But I haven't dared to go that far yet. I saw smoke from a distance, but I didn't want to lose my home. I don't... I don't know anything else about it. I-I hope that that helps you a bit.." She puts her hands in her lap and waits for your to respond.

She stifles a laugh, obviously entertained by the story that you have heard and passed on to her. "Oh, that's great. Sounds like just what we need to clean up this mess. Well, I guess it's information nonetheless. Who gave you this story? I may need to... ask a few things of this person later about what the hell that means." She curls a strand of hair around her fingers and sighs, slightly disappointed that she didn't find anything too informative on the first day.

"Well, I suppose that was still an interesting talk. Is there anything else you might have found that pertains to my endeavors? If not, I have some administrative tasks to deal with, and frankly, the difficulty of these tasks is not decreasing. Mr. Eh Ah, I do trust that you will keep everything we discuss in confidence. Fear and rumors are the enemies of the present, and I do not wish to have matters complicated by our findings."

so there is very literal power in names. good to know. and good reason to use disrespectful nicknames. Might slightly depower, or at least avoid empowering, the target.
"What time-travel rules does Purply follow? The 'going through time makes things the way they already ended up' stable-time-loop type or the 'go back and change things with unintended concequences' kind? You just said that both versions of him are younger than the one you know. Can we change his past, making him change your past, and my present? or is what we do now what makes him into who he becomes in your past?"

"Oh. Oh yes. It does help a lot. Thanks. I'll be back in a bit, I think. And I'll not tell anyone about you, either, so don't worry."

To the human grounds.

Eh Ah

"It was a particular Aecrocian fellow who lived with the Atisi, Dennis Kothir was his name, he's married into the Atisi tribal structure - definitely an asset on lore, and a very prominent link between the Atisi and less insular folk, so it would probably be best if he is handled with care. I am saying this largely because I know of no other person among the Atisi who is likely to tell me or any imperial authority much more than he, and I suspect there is much he might know if appropriately questioned. I was in a bit of a rush in asking him questions, and perhaps a bit unfocused in my approach for fear of alienating him."

"As for confidentiality, Your Majesty need not worry about that. Though I may be long-winded, I try not to pour out all my secrets to just any stranger, and I find that anybody I might know better on this island is likely very much dead by now. I wish you good luck in dealing with the administrative issues at hand, and will not take up more of your time. Instead, I think I shall investigate more and report any further findings at a later time."

If that'll be all, head over to the volcano if it looks at least semi-safe.

Can we change his past, making him change your past, and my present? or is what we do now what makes him into who he becomes in your past?"

"Woah woah woah," she says, putting up her hands up in a visual way of telling you to slow down. "I didn't clarify what the extent of the Twilight Prince's powers are. When he's... well, let's say 'normal', he is only able to change our view of the speed of time or stop it from moving forward for us. He can't make it go backward - at least, not normally. I don't really know the specifics of it, but basically he can make himself or some other objects go faster through time or slower. He can even stop objects or people in a point of time. Don't ask me how it works, but I'm assuming it takes a lot of energy because he doesn't use his abilities much.

"So, it honestly isn't that crazy. His rival has been able to defeat him by making him wear out his abilities and trapping him. Again, the wrench in it all is the Dragonfly, the Medium that Amethyst boy is paired to. When the Dragonfly lends his power to the Prince, things start to get uglier. The Prince gains more power, he's able to manage his time abilities for longer, and, sometimes, he is able to rewind time or produce different copies of him at one time. It got worse when the Prince started killing some of the other Guardians, or taking the power from already dead Guardians. As you can imagine, it was an incredibly fun time."
She finishes her words with a sour tone, as you would think the subject would make her feel.

"You just said that both versions of him are younger than the one you know. Can we change his past, making him change your past, and my present? or is what we do now what makes him into who he becomes in your past?"

"I don't know the exact age about the older one. At the very least, he seems to be around the age I would expect him to be, but I don't know jack about how this time-relativity stuff works. Because of that, I really have no freaking idea what happens when you mess with one version or the other of him. To be honest, I'm not sure if he even knows that there's two versions of him. So, yeah. No idea what happens when we do anything to either of them."

"well, you've seen the young one and I haven't. What do you know about that version? and why is the version I met an enemy of the Shadows?"

She rubs her eyes and tries to recollect all of the details. Apparently anxious, she brings a hand under the table and produces yet another aluminum can, popping it open with a satisfying snap-fizz. Finally, she takes a sip of the drink and begins to recount what she knows.
"Okay, I only saw him once, just around the time that everything went haywire on Atis. He had black hair and his trademark purple eyes, which surprised me - well, not as much as finding Amethyst junior yet again. I haven't seen him before without purple hair, so it looks... weird to see him with black hair, let alone at a child's age. Like you'd expect for a child, he was afraid for the others in the house. I think there was his mother and maybe his sister, and some other guy, maybe the father, all together in the house. He didn't show anything else special, he was just.. being a scared kid in a freaky time.

"As for the Shadows, well, most of the Guardians are in agreement that the Shadows suck horribly and need to go. The Twilight Prince is no exception; in fact, I'd say he's the leader of the pack when it comes to hunting Shadows, even with his.. controversial beliefs. I'm not sure how much this version of the Twilight Prince knows about the Shadows, but at least we know that he's fighting them. Other than that, I can't really say much else about the two versions. I've got as little of a clue as you do when it comes to these two. They might know everything or they might be completely clueless, too. Who knows? I don't."

"So, how are you getting your information? You didn't know about Purply number two until I mentioned him, but now you know how old he is?"

"Welp, on to the Shadows. What more can you tell me about them?"

Danielle holds a hand to her forehead and takes another sip of her drink. "I told you before, I can kinda see what you see, but not in the way you think. I don't have your vision. I get some kind of weird filter over my vision, which gets worse when you're interacting with other people. That filter also applies to my other senses, except for physical interaction, which I obviously can't do in this stupid spirit world. I saw his figure and heard a somewhat familiar voice, but I couldn't tie it together until you let me know who it was. Then it clicked. And then it became a whole lot worse, as you can see." She puts her head down and groans. "Mmm. I'm not cut out for this stupid mentoring business. Toooo many headaches." She downs the rest of the can and tosses it with the rest.

"Right, the Shadows, then.. oh boy. Did I tell you about why they're here? Well, I don't really know, to be honest. They're supposed to be the inner representations of the darkest parts of ourselves: secrets, greed, lies, despair, lust, and so on. Sometimes, the Shadows are innocent, and are just what they're supposed to be. But something between the beginning of the human race and where we are now screwed up. They're beginning to manifest in the real world and starting to hunt down humans. They're like... animals, but still us. As far as I know, we're able to dissipate them and spread them into the ground. But unless they find peace with their former owners or with something else that quells them, they continue to reform and keep on going. It never ends unless the living being that manifested it either dies or confronts their Shadow.

"...As you can imagine, it's very rare that we actually find the former hosts of the Shadows to actually lay the Shadows to rest. So we were on the run for a long time. It just so happens that some of our abilities as Guardians allow us to evaporate Shadows for an extremely long time, but it takes a lot of power. Hell, a tiny amount of Guardians have actually succeeded in banishing Shadows forever by, um... either taking the Shadows into their own soul or finding another soul host for the Shadow. As you might think, this is actually extremely freaking unhealthy for anyone who takes on another Shadow that's not their own.

"But we got somewhere. Some of our techno-freaks got together to create some cool weapons to fight the Shadows: using extremely expensive crystals to trap Shadows or Souls, weapons that more efficiently dissipate Shadows, and some other neat gadgets. It was too late though, there were just too many. Nobody could fight that many. Aaaand then the Break happened, which brings us just right freaking here. So, uh... yeah. That's your Shadow knowledge, delivered straight from a Shadow Hunter extraordinaire, also known as a Guardian."

The wind begins to kick up around the meadow. You can see the sky darken and flicker just for a moment before returning to normal, and a hollow sound echoes through the forest. Danielle looks back up and sighs once more. "We should probably wrap this up soon. I know that's a lot to soak in for once, but take my word with a grain of salt, 'cause I don't really know the total science behind those freaks. I'm basically regurgitating information that the Dragonfly taught me. So, any questions?"
