I've been looking at the game on and off for about 5-6 years now, only really made a concerted effort to get into it recently (last couple of months) though

First played during the first major hiatus.

Actually got into it right at the start of the second minor hiatus.

That pretty much sums up my experience too.  Had a friend introduce both this and Unreal World to me at the time

I started playing around August of 2010, though I had heard about the game a few years prior I never had much interest because of the ASCII until I saw a lets play in August and realized it was a crazy deep game and you could add tilesets. I then took a break for a few years after only playing about a month and recently came back(about a month ago) again to check it out. The necromancers and evil stuff added a lot to the game I felt was lacking. So this time I will probably stick around for a while with the new update pending and all the new stuff since I last played :).

.27 something, LOLbuggy, good times. I don't play much DF at all these days, I'm waiting to see how the grand plan turns out in a few years. DF spoiled me for every other game though, I just can't get enough sandbox.

I migrated around the latter part of the first great hiatus. Though I was aware of df as early as the end of the 3d era, but was initially turned away by the ascii. I wouldn't give the game a honest chance until another year or so when tvtropes linked me to the epic trilogy of Boatmurdered, Headshoots, and Syrupleaf.

What exactly was the game like in the "Dark Ages," and what made it so "dark?" All I could find on it was a short blurb on the 23a section of the wiki that mentioned druids being able to animate trees to attack the fortress.

I labeled "The Dark Times" as such because the game hadn't been released yet.

Started with DF2010, played around a little, then came back a while later. Registered here in 2012, a few months earlier is when I really started getting really into the game.

I've got far more hours clocked on the 2d versions than 3d ones.

^ This. It's so much easier to play DF when you have a week or two with nothing to do...

I looked at DF sometime in late '06 (I think) and somehow managed to stupidly miss Dwarf Mode and only touch Adventure Mode. Needless to say it seemed reasonably impressive but wasn't particularly addictive. I properly started to play Dwarf Mode at some point in early '07. I still miss being able to flood the world.

It must have been released before that, or you've got the dates wrong.  I registered in October 2006, and had been playing at least a month before registering.  OH WAIT, I DONT KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER.  nevermind then. voted wrong.

A friend of mine introduced me to the game, and he had been fooling with it at least a few months before I bothered to pick it up.  None of us were Bay12 insiders, but would have heard of it through whatever niche gamer media we followed.

There are SOME guys who were in the ARMOK 1 and LCS communities that saw the game before release.  There were scripted undead invasions and things like that, but all that stuff was cut before the first release.  The animated tree thing was from a tech demo video that Toady put up, never made it into one of the playable versions.  I think you can still download the video, though.

I first played during the first great hiatus, but only for a few hours. I then forgot about the game for a couple of years, and started playing it again during the second minor hiatus. I never played long enough to encounter a siege, and the only thing that killed my forts were starvation. I only played two or three forts. I stopped for a while again, then coincidentally came back right after 34.01 released. I started playing a lot, learned a lot more about the game, and actually got to the stage where I was constantly under siege by the goblins. I haven't played much recently, but I'm definitely going to start again once the new version comes out.

I found out about the game and downloaded it sometime in 2009. Couldn't figure out how to even get out of world gen. Then gave up and forgot about it.
I remembered it and actually started playing it in november 2011.

About December '11, though I first discovered and tried to play DF in about January of the same year, subsequently giving up on it after deciding it was too complex for me. How foolish I once was.
