I started way back in 2009. Though I was aware of it for maybe a year or two before that.

A month or so before 0.34.  I still have the saves of my first fortresses, made in 0.31. They seem so small, weak and badly organized
to me now...

I have a bunch of old forts up on DFMA, and I made hallways and rooms huge on there. I later refined the techniques though my storage areas still tend to get big.

There's also one of my early megaprojects, which unfortunately died a painful death from FPS.

Apparently The Second Minor Hiatus, though in the very late days of it (10 February is my registering date on these very forums).
So pretty much the Second Great Hiatus.

First Minor, I believe, for me. Certainly the era of 2D, though after Boatmurdered was compiled.

Imanoob.  Only been at it for about a year - barely long enough to get the basics down!  Basically, turned to DF because SimCity 5 was the suxxorz; haven't looked back since!

Just as 40d was being worked on. I still have my first lasting fortress, somewhere. :)

My join date is October 11th 2010, but my first post, four days later, is about a well-thriving fort. I know that before I gave in and started playing I'd seen my brother reading the wiki for a while, and I tend to lurk, so it's hard to say... but DF2010 era, definitely.

Yes, but mining any of it would kill off your fortress eventually. Every season, the game would roll a random number between 0 and 99. If the amount of ore mined was greater than that number and you weren't under siege, you'd be kicked to a special Game Over screen and be unable to reclaim the fortress.

What exactly was the game like in the "Dark Ages," and what made it so "dark?" All I could find on it was a short blurb on the 23a section of the wiki that mentioned druids being able to animate trees to attack the fortress.
