Tropes may not be bad, but TVT is. There was a purge a while back when the site owners were trying to direct what people posted and what things were called. I decided I was done with it. Either your website is community content and you leave them to it (with some reasonable censorship so it doesn't become a cesspit) or your website is content that you publish and the community gets to enjoy it. It's a shitty thing to say you're going to make money off everyone else's work and then tell them how to do it. If I'm vacuuming a floor and you start telling me how I'm doing it wrong, I'm handing you that vacuum and you can do it yourself. If I wanna call it a Toblerone, screw anybody who says otherwise just to fortify their own intellectual property.
There's freedom, and then there's abusing that freedom. Not to mention endangering the ability of the site to keep functioning. The purge I believe you were referring to, of pretty much all rape-related tropes? They had to, or else Google (I think) wouldn't buy advertising space from them, meaning that
Plus TVT has some problems with their content.
Among the various filtering options I'd like to see in a web browser is the removal of any mention of fanfic. Still don't see why leech crud gets entries on TVT. There's a serious legitimacy problem when your creative work is basically some space robot manga - but everyone is in high school! Or Harry Potter but Harry is a vampire and that one chick is a werewolf and one day they stumble upon a book of secret magical sex positions.
(1) Make up your own shit.
(2) If you ignore (1), expect that nobody will care.
Fun fact--crap fanfics like that aren't on TV Tropes. The fanfics on TV Tropes are ones like
Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, ie the fanfics which would be essentially indistinguishable from independent-if-derivative original works if they changed the names.
Because people post without bothering to read the previous entries you get a ton of crap that's double-posted.
Because having access to a keyboard and dialup doesn't guarantee intelligence, you get a ton of crap that's stupid.
The people who both don't read and are dumb post stuff in the wrong places.
Not enough people wikignome to fix the idiocy and when they do there's an uproar because some precious little angel's 100 bytes of poorly-researched text isn't displaying on TVT anymore.
Well, yes, that is sometimes a problem. In my experience, though, it's limited mainly to typos. I'll admit, I've made some minor mistakes in the past, and they've been caught by people within a day or two. I'd call that an acceptable rate.
