Interplanetary - Build Bigger Cannons Today!
« on: November 12, 2013, 09:23:39 am »

So I stumbled upon this gem today,

Interplanetary!

A fun game where you arm yourselves with slingshots and fire rocks at each other!

Slingshots being gigantic cannons and each other meaning planets in randomly generated solar system.

Three types of weapons to use.

Rails - Cheap and Inaccurate Easy to slam into another orbital body.
Missles - Expensive and accurate as all hell.
Beam - Easy to aim but does light damage.

You need to successfully destroy the cities of your enemies while ensuring the survival of your own. Gravity can effect the course of your weaponry and each shot needs to be carefully considered. You can manage infrastructure and engage in spying to better understand your enemy and his weak points.

Give it a look and check out the alpha game play video on the website linked at the top. They are currently preparing for a steam green light attempt from what I hear.

It is fun concept. However, I would like to see a bit more user friendliness on the firing. Having better guesstimation on how fast and how far the planets will move each turn.

... okay, OP, dev, or anyone: As a Scorched Earth aficionado*, how would you sell this game to me? What does it do different from its bajillion predecessors? What is new and, if not new, what is done better? Why would I choose Interplanetary in particular in the incredibly saturated field of games that is Scorched Earth clones and derivatives?

*Okay, so I'm too terrible at them to go that far. But I've probably played a good 30-40 different Scorched Earth clones/derivatives over the years (and probably seen that number again of ones I didn't play), including at least seven or eight that had multiple gravity points, i.e. were based on shooting from different planets.

E: Though, actually looking at the page, the 3D is a good start. That's actually quite rare insofar as the style goes.

First major difference is the setting: Interplanetary is about warfare between planets instead of just n cannons/tanks separated by mountains. You have to take into account the gravity wells of planets and other celestial bodies while targeting. Then there's the strategic base building (or in this case, planet building) aspect with resource management, tech research (not yet implemented) etc. All in all we wanted to create a new kind of game experience with some familiar elements, artillery games are just one source of inspiration. :)

So... basically this is "Warheads SE" but with more features/polish and in 3D?

I saw on youtube that players were building up cities, launchers ETC.
What effect do those have (beside the obvious things like... launchers launch things into SPESS)

This looks pretty cool and gets into one of the real horror scenarios of future warfare.  As technology scales up so does destruction.  You'd never see a cute little tramp freighter thing like in Sci-fi stories IRL because if you crashed it at full speed it would sterilize the planet.

I gots to try this game >:o

The interesting thing about space in particular, is that any given engine is virtually indistinguishable from a weapon.  Nearly every type has the capacity to explode, and even working perfectly it has the power to become a kinetic kill vehicle.

Warheads is probably the most similar game out there is you consider just the targeting phase of Interplanetary, but I think you will find even that quite different. Our game revolves around "feet on the ground" approach to interplanetary warfare. Two planets within one planetary system have evolved intelligent life and reached planetary civilizations. At this point they realize they will be competing for the resources of their system very soon, and the rival civilization needs to be exterminated before they get the upper hand. Technology isn't there yet to send any large scale weapon platforms to space, let alone an invasion force. Second best alternative? Build massive railguns right on the planet surface and start bombarding the enemy. Develop the infrastructure of your home planet, spy on the enemy to reveal their weak spots, research technology to gain access to new weapon systems and defenses.

To put it simply, you need to build weapons on the planet surface and protect your cities. To do this you need some resources, so you need to build some mines and power plants as well. The game is lost if all your cities are gone. Research, espionage, advanced city management and some other features are not yet implemented, but that shouldn't take too long. :D

I gots to try this game >:o

Did you get your alpha code yet? ;)

Can we actually build colonies or mines or whatever on the other planets of the system ? I mean, the premise of the game is "compete for resources" but from what I read it doesn't seem like you can build on planets other than your own.

That's a feature we would very much like to add, but can't make any promises yet.
