Check to see if the crystal is still there.


Go into town and buy some surgical equipment.
Possibly just some sharp knives from the local barber.
Oddly, the crystal has disappeared without a trace. It seems that it was somehow expended upon releasing the torrent of power.
Anyway, you head to the market and get some basic medical equipment for 50 Steinmarks.

Mike: "I think that thing is randomly making things magical... really powerful looking to I think it affected the whole town. Hey, I wonder if we could trap that energy in a confined space and get it more controlled... Could probably use some kind of oven, and then reflect it back with some kind of barrier; if anyone find magic-reflecting bariers or an oven maybe we could try this out?"

Unfortunately, you cannot find the crystal anywhere.

Alexei will fashion out an oven design. However he got no understanding of anything magical.
You come up with a design that you think may work if it can be blocked, but you're not sure if it's worth building, now that the crystal has disappeared.

Malaria returns to the lab. "Alright. That was intense. Green beard, I heard some locals had a horse breath fire and vanish. You want to go look into that with me? I trust our colleagues to handle the crystal and its aftereffects for now."
Malaria and Green beard ask around and manage to find the farmer's stall. He seems as eager to know what's happening as the lab, so he leads you to the farm.
The farmer then explains the situation to Malaria and Green beard: "I was just making sure everything was alright around the farm and calmin' down the animals after that strange light, when my best plow horse started to act funny. So I goes over to check on him, when I sees that he has red eyes. Then, he starts sneezin' up bits of fire, so I get outa there. I come back a bit later, and the door to his stall is snapped like matchwood and he's nowheres to be found!"
The farmer leads Malaria and Green to the stall. The door has been splintered, obviously by a powerful blow. And indeed, the stall's empty. Malaria stoops down and inspects the hay lining the ground, finding that it is blackened at parts. They can see that there isn't a whole lot left to look at, so they leave.

Im with you Malaria I might try to buy myself a fishing net from a local why were out. By the way want some frog legs?
On the way back from the stables, you buy a small cheap net for 15 Steinmarks.

Set up the potted plants in a secluded room, with lots of light. Begin watering them, and check for vermin.
Take one piece of glowing chalk and use it to paint a wolfsbane plant on a blackboard, wearing gloves

You set up your plants and make sure they are healthy. You then carefully sketch a wolfsbane on the blackboard. Nothing much happens to the drawing, it is just sitting on the board, glowing slightly as if concealing a latent energy. It appears to be dormant, but perhaps there is a way to activate it?

"Gentlemen and Gentlewomen, I propose that we suspend testing of the artifact until such time as we determine what just happened. I for one will be attempting to discern the precise effects of this... chalk."

Septimus closely examines the glowing chalk, clears a wide radius from the blackboard and then attempts to write with it.
The chalk glows with a silvery-blue light which remains steady. It does not appear to be dangerous to the touch, and except for the glowing, appears for all intents and purposes feels like normal chalk.

You write "Hello world" on the chalkboard, but like the wolfsbane drawn earlier, it just appears to be sitting there dormant.

You write some inane babble down, but like all other examples, nothing happens.

Test ruler.
You pick up the ruler. It doesn't feel very different, if not a bit warm to the touch. You begin to play around with it. It doesn't seem to have any powers related to measuring. You swing it through the air, and it slightly warms up. Next, you lightly tap a table with it; on contact, there is a small bit of heat, and blue sparks bounce off the tip and go out on the table. It doesn't seem to be an inherently very powerful object.

We should test whether different materials can block it. Someone should go buy a box plated with lead, one with silver, one with gold, etc.

I reserve a chalkboard and use normal chalk to draw a map of the town. Mark down where we were when the cat incident happened, and write "cat reanimated" and the time on the side. Similarly mark down all the places and time of day when something occurred that we know about - that is, we heard about it from the person it actually happened to, not a rumor.

Then I go out and gather information to add to the board.

You sketch a crude map of the town on a board. You then go out to search for new events, but it seems like most of the obvious stuff has already been noticed.

"We might want to ask everyone in town to check their basements and other places they don't go into very much. Maybe get somebody wealthy to put out a bounty on weird stuff, and be our patron by lending it to us to study."

Maleria walks into the lab with a barely concealed grin on her face. "I think there is a super powered horse on the loose. Some of you should round up the townsfolk and send a posse after it. It would be a good specimen either alive or dead."

She then sits down at her desk, and begins composing letters to the various noblemen and clergy in town. The read something like this:

Dear [Name and Title here],

We have recently been given a strange object found by a local farmer. When we attempted to investigate it, the strange happenings I am sure you have heard of by now occurred. We do not know what this object is, what exactly it does, how to best use it, or even how to destroy it. It is clear however that it is very powerful and perhaps very dangerous.

Steinheim Laboratories has decided to devote itself to the safe research of the origins, powers, and limitations of the object. We fear however that further research in town may cause further incidents. I write to you today to humbly request aid. Steinheim Laboratories wishes to build an expansion lab outside of town specifically for this new object, and we need donations of gold, land, and/or manpower to make it happen. I implore you to pitch in for the good of [your subjects/your serfs/your flock/ect] and all who live in this fine city. With your help, I can only imagine what sort of discoveries can be made.

Head to the nearest pond lake or stream get permission from the land owner and start fishing observe what I catch any fish i know that is edible and kill it if I catch any frogs or turtles into my cage. Hey Malaria could you do me a favor and see if you can russel up a cheap cart im going to start selling some fish I catch bring in a little money for the lab.

take care of the plants by giving them water. Then proceed to buy equipment to extract essences, like bubble glasses, glass tubes and a metallic plate to hold a small fire. Set these items up close to the plants. Walk through town and try to hear gossip about possible tasks.
