You rule out so many great indie games that have miniscule teams with such strict rules.  Probably the majority, since even most flash games are collaborations between a programmer/animator and a composer.

Anyway, many of the voxel-style games are one dev.

I think dota2 is down to one dev now. /joke

I hope it weeds out the majority of games.

Treasure Adventure Game http://www.robitstudios.com/treasure-adventure-game/

Citation from GoG:

Treasure Adventure Game was created by Stephen Orlando. He spent over 2 years of his life developing it. When you see the scope and detail in this game, it’s hard to believe that it was created by just one guy. But it was! So if you like it, head over to his website and break that donate button!

I strongly recommend Iji, though not if you will be doing only a partial playthrough for the review - for best effect, you need to complete the game.  In one session if possible, though it probably isn't - my first playthrough was over 6 hours, not a huge amount but a lot for a day.

Cave Story seems like the most obvious one.

If by single author you mean one person doing design, coding and art, check out:

I wonder if the game has become odd.

Isn't the Avernum series made by one guy, or did his wife do the art? Avernum is a great game but unfortunately, unless you're super into the story and/or genre, it gets repetitive. The episodes do, I mean. If you've played through one you've pretty much experienced everything noteworthy about the entire series.

Is there actual work involved in here somewhere? I've been eyeballing the review-writing world from a distance for a while now, heavens know I've played enough to know the odds and ends of the media type.

If it is actually for work, t'would it be brash for me to ask where?

Just pretend work.

There's also Five Days A Stranger and Seven Days a Skeptic, point-and-click adventures by Yahtzee Croshaw (the Zero Punctuation guy). I haven't played Seven Days, but Five Days is a pretty good game. There was a minor glitch near the end with an item becoming impossible to click, but that fixed itself after a few attempts.

Trilby's Notes and Six Days a Sacrifice if you want the entire series.

There's also 1213 and Adventures in the Galaxy of Fantabulous Wonderment.

All of which I suggest for everyone, for I am a massive fanboy.

That reminds me, the Geneforge series was all done by one guy, a Jeff Vogel. Those are similar top-down RPG style games.
