FEEL THE BURN! (Exercise thread)
« on: November 10, 2013, 11:45:33 pm »

I haven't exercised in years, aside from the one day last year that we changed apartments. Seeing as I'm a sedentary programmer and would like to not die young, I started following a simple exercise program (Nerd Fitness, if you're interested).

WTF, body? I know I've neglected you for years, but that second rep took more out of me than it should have.

So, what is the Twelfth Bay doing to stay in shape?

If you have (or had) a gym membership, was it worth it? I like the idea of going to one, but I could be doing exercises at home during that time and I wouldn't have to drive to the gym or pay them a monthly fee.

These days I stay in shape mostly through anxiety.

I wish I could exercise. All I do is swimming for a hour two times a week (and usually not that often), and a few push ups before sleep. I've always been made complacent by my height, which means I can weigh substantially more and gain more then a average person and still be in healthy limits.

I really, really need to start exercising again. I miss my punching bag, but hopefully I'll have somewhere to hang it soon. Don't get me wrong, I love my apartment, but that's the main drawback to it.

I work in a fast-food place, so I get more exercise than I'm actually supposed to be getting, but I never get hungry so I'm not eating enough.
Dang it, body, why don't you talk to me?

Ooh, you're from the Bay Area, acetech?!

I don't have a car, I run a bit in the mornings (and after public transportation), and I'm about to start a martial arts class.

Also I have a chest cold.

Yup. Peninsula.

Chest cold. Good exercise. Gets the lungs workin' a bit harder, y'know?

Get up->drive to class->sit in class->drive to work->sit and code->drive home->sit and do homework->go to sleep

Can't even do 20 consecutive sit ups anymore. Great thread idea, time to take a look at these workout suggestions.

I karate.
I have a friend who does Jiujutsu. A specific variant that focusses on pinching you in places that hurt like fuck. I am convinced that there is no more dangerous martial art than this ;_;
(Luckily he demonstrates it on my other friends more than me.)

I go to the gym about once or twice a week, and I've started doing running recently as well. What was really embarassing was my almost complete inability to run despite years of being on the cross - trainer and stepper at le jeem.  :-[

I jiujitsu as well, although not often as I'd like.

I prefer it to karate because when I did karate we focused on correct form, and more correct form, and not enough fighting.

Jiujutsu ALSO focuses on correct form, but it's more practical.

Not to mention more complete. Grappling, strangling and arm/leg locks at very close range and blows at close range.

Shook

I have a membership at the local Fitness World, and have spent the money it costs to have a proper training plan set up for me (but no personal trainer hired, ye gods). It's basically a whole body training program, ideally up to 3 times per week, but it tends to fuck me up so bad that it ends up being once or twice instead. I don't feel like i've gotten notably stronger (my bod doesn't seem to enjoy the notion of building more mahscle), but i THINK my endurance has risen very slightly. So... +1 endurance? Would like to get some +STR as well, but hey, i originally just started it to get a bit healthier, since my life style isn't exactly what you'd call healthy.

Besides that, i have a 15-25 minute walk to and from university every day (which is uphill all the way back), which at least keeps me from calcifying. And besides THAT, i'm a tall person with a fast metabolism, so i'm actually more at risk of becoming underweight than overweight, even before i started exercising. In fact, i'm the second skinniest person i know of, rescued only from the first place by my manly legs which are much more normal in thickness.
