Agree, plus that's about the LAST thing *I* want to see from this kind of game - author spending valuable development time on useless graphics.

Yes, although some involving combat can be tough. In those cases you can just come back to them later.

So, we had our first war as a fleet this past weekend, and everyone seemed to have a really fun time at it.

This bodes well I think. I just wish more people would stick around :( I trimmed over half the fleet out because they hadn't played in three weeks or more.
