You shouldn't decide what to play until after you've rolled stats, guys, or you'll end up with a 9 Wisdom Cleric :P

OK question for DM:

(I'm rereading the PHB because I don't want to risk mistaking one of the house rules we've always used with what's actually supposed to be in there :P )

I can't find where it says how you deal with multi-class characters and proficiencies.
Do you calculate for each class independently? (This makes an Elf F/M/T start with tons of proficiencies and get them quickly)
Or do you use the best category for nonweapon profs. and the best category for weapon profs. among your classes?
Or somehow average them? (Such as calculating the profs. you get for F and then for M and then for T, but dividing each number by 3, and gaining a new prof only when you reach a whole number)

Multiclass characters' starting funds: use the best range, or roll for each and take the highest amount, or roll for all and total it, or roll each and average the results?

EDIT: Found my answer. I think it's roughly page 95 (I'm looking at a PDF that lacks page numbers), "Multiclass Benefits and Restrictions". Evidently for proficiencies you take the highest initial amount, and the fastest progression, for weapons and nonweapons separately. Money uses the "most generous" which I guess would be the highest maximum.

What part of "Optimization is boring" did you not get? I want a 3 strenght fighter with 4 constitution damn it and I will reroll as many times as it takes to get these stats!

I got real lucky on that HP roll but then got screwed on starting gold :/
I want Vise to be the locks and traps guy, and would have preferred a Dwarf but I didn't have the CON for it. Oh well, maybe after Vise dies horribly. I could have really bumped up his Open Locks and Find/Remove Traps with a kit, some gear from the Complete Thief, etc. but I figured it would be nice to just go with the basic stuff. I'm happy.

Well, I'll be happy when I get some loot and can afford pants and better food than this loaf of stale bread I crammed in my backpack.

EDIT: Some random rolling on some tables at Seventh Sanctum gave me his special combat move: the Tombstone Jawbreaker. Rolled here for personality and got Impertinent, Fastidious, and Hates Disease / Hazardous Chemicals. Also his dungeoneering motivation: impressionable younger relative of another PC and follows him everywhere.

So who wants a gnomish nephew?!

Is that in order? Because if you're swapping them around that isn't too bad. The 6 hurts, but the 8 on some stats still doesn't give a penalty.

But because proficiency checks work off the straight stat, and it's d20 roll under for success, it can still suck.

In order. Which pretty much stops my hopes for being a mage if I can't reroll.

Could still be a mage - you need minimum 9 INT. Having 11 INT gives a 45% chance to learn spell (if he's even using that), and the max spell level you can learn is 5th (which would only become a limitation at Mage level 12 when you would get access to 6th level spells - and by then you may have found a way to increase it).

You'd only get an XP bonus at 16 INT and even then 10% isn't a big deal. Compared to a Mage with 16 INT you'd only occasionally be a level behind and never more than 1 level behind until you hit high level. For example, a 7th level Mage with 60,000 XP compared to his buddy who has the bonus and got 66,000 XP - but you need 90,000 to hit level 8. Pretty much you're only ever going to be one level behind him and even then for only one adventure.

Max 7 spells known per level is kinda rough. Again, assuming he's using that. Of course you'd have to get 17+ INT before you'd have a really comfortable number of spells per level.

And of course you're nowhere near able to be a specialist wizard, which require a 15 or 16 in some other non-INT stat in addition to the 9 INT.

But dem's da breaks when it comes to 1E/2E wizardry.

I felt the same issues with my Thief. If you have a really high DEX you're effectively a level higher in terms of your Thief abilities. Or you could look at it that you'll pick up that level pretty soon so it's no big deal.

Quick question for the GM.

At some point, there was this neat little spell called cantrip, a first-level spell that let you do nine minor things per use--things like give someone an itch, summon a bee, summon a temporary coin, stuff like that. My dad has all sorts of great tales of how he used it to kill a knight, gain the favor of a queen, etc. Could I have that as my spell?

Sure thing. It's like prestidigitation for 2e.

Yes :D.

EDIT: Gah, wrong button.

A little. The effects are (slightly) more powerful, and you don't have to use them in an hour, but you only get nine per use.

1E's Unearthed Arcana has individual cantrips. You'd memorize, say, Belch or Gather. But you get 4 cantrips in place of 1 first-level spell.
2E has Cantrip, a 1st level spell, which lets you cast a cantrip every single round if you wanted for 1 hour per level.

Which is pretty sweet when it comes to cleaning your house on the weekend.

Uh, I've never roleplayed before (well I mean not with a DM or group) and I'd like to join because I know that the earlier D&D versions are simple, easy to learn, and fun. Mind if I join?

Sure. This isn't a heavy-duty game, so it's probably better for the inexperienced.

Actually, the earlier editions have a lot more oddities to them, not less :P.
