Warlords of Draenor the new WoW Expansion
« on: November 09, 2013, 04:10:20 pm »

so, blizzard seems to try on getting on the same ground as the last online games of these last years. i like the setting, it doesnt involve more history related to the burning legion or the old gods except for the old warcraft references. the idea of creating non instanced bases in the world sounds nice but i think it could have iterated more in that matter. Draenor before the destruction seems to be a really beatifull place, and the chance to know more about the clans, at least before the corruption is nice.

so what do you think of that?

announcement trailer here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYueIdI_2L0

and the official website here http://us.battle.net/wow/es/warlords-of-draenor/ (the site got me redirected to the spanish website so i dont know if you'll get the normal english site, my bad)

Why isn't this trailer an awe-inducing cinematic, like all the previous ones were?

I haven't played WoW in 7 years now, and i'm not returning there in my lifetime, but i found that strange. Blizz sleeps on cash, after all, and they were making amazing video bits since Warcraft 3.

Admittedly, this expansion does have me thinking. It's been years now since I've been back, and I do kinda miss playing.

Player housing finally being a thing is intriguing.

And I do like the fact they're finally fixing one of the core reasons I stopped playing, with the Connected Realms thing. Abysmally low population realms are being permanently linked with other low pop realms to make for a larger playerbase you can talk/trade/guild/fight with.

My old server is getting linked with four other servers.

It's not the cinematic. I believe they do a trailer first, then the professional cinematic comes out much closer to release day.

like lightning says, they first make a trailer from ingame teasing the new features and that stuff, the over 9000 cinematics come when the game launches usually or some weeks before launch...

same usually happens with CCP and EVE, they usually make the trailer before launch or the same day.

If I were ever going to go back, it would probably be this one. And then I think about how many completely worthless hours went into the game, and how no-one I know still plays, and all the time it would take me to rebuild my UI, and how much it would cost to get the 3 expansions I've missed, and....

Having recently tried the free trial thing (and previously having only played open beta), I have to say it has aged very poorly and there are now F2P MMORPGs that easily outclass it. It felt very trashy, and I encountered bugs in the goblin starting area, such as camera for a minigame getting stuck in the wrong place, or mobs that got stuck in place and could not be hit for some reason.

Also, them not even doing CGI for the non-gameplay combat in the trailer kinda says something.

the game has indeed aged very bad TBH, but they seem to be getting on the job again, as for the CGI, again, the CGI trailer is practically the intro of the game, and its usually made some months or weeks before launch, they always announce the next expansion with an ingame made trailer if you dont believe me go look for the trailers for cataclysm and mists of pandaria, heck, even lich king and burning crusade where like that.....

its indeed a good time to go back, they even announced a system in which you can level up your char to 90 automatically, only one per account and is a one time thing, so you can jump directly to the expansion's content.

I'm not really impressed, I mean the entire announcement was really underwhelming. I imagine from a lore standpoint it won't be particularly amazing (But then again, any who did enjoy WoW lore probably doesn't play anymore). Seems like they're packing in less dungeons and raids at launch as well (Or at least from what I read somewhere). MoP had less dungeons/raids available at launch than WoTLK did and they seem to be continuing that trend with WoD. Stats look like they're being further simplified beyond the already watered down version it previously had, which really isn't a good thing. Really, it just seems like Blizzard is trying to keep WoW going as long as they can by updating the game to be similar to all of the current MMO's on the market, primarily by making the combat simple and more "fluid".

Also, if you ever get the feeling to return to WoW after playing it in the past, don't. You'll play for a month or two, get bored again, then quit. If you REALLY want to play WoW, just play on a private server so you don't have to waste money on something you're trying to get back into again just because you're nostalgic about it.

LOL that's what i do, TBH i've never played in the official game, no money for that, the downsides of private servers are of course being 1 or 2 expansions behind the current development and not having a gameplay at least similar to the official experience :( but hey at least its free....

same with Lineage II, of course, until the change to F2P, althought looks like it has been so watered down that it isnt fun anymore....

Yeah I'm under no illusion that it would be close to what I played 4 or 5 years ago. Looking back on it, I enjoyed playing with RL friends who have all moved on, and the handful of people I know who got in after only do raids (which I enjoyed then but pfffft no way am I devoting hours at a time 3 nights a week pissing my life away again. Just no.). I miss the people, not really the game.

WoW always keeps its hooks in you if you played it enough.  The trick is to shove them and twist so the prong is exposed, and you can see the razor barb for what it is.

Never again.

I played World of Warcraft about... 2-3 months ago. I play really only to explore how much they've improved in their world/object design, which is a lot. If you compare the areas of, say, the Eastern Kingdoms with those in Pandaria, the improvement in how mountains area designed and things like ground cover are so much better. One of my favourite areas is that high mountainous area in Northrend.

Yeah, zone design and art are really something else from WotLK onward.

That isn't to say older zones aren't good. Seeing Mulgore again would probably bury me under nostalgia feels, and for TBC, Zangarmarsh and Nagrand are pretty damn good.

I liked Desolace a lot, also the desert zone north of where all the Ahn'Qiraj shit is.

Moghjubar's right I feel, I still get the occasional urge to go play WoW, to feel that animal-brain pleasure of seeing a crowd of golden question marks after a long questing session (been playing a little Rift, and the blue quest-complete icons just aren't the same) or the joy of 20% crit chance on my PvP warlock for fist of the gods shadow bolts, but at some point when I was playing I pulled off the pretty outer layer and saw the machinery beneath and it just killed the game for me, really killed almost all MMOs for me.
