After a bunch of crashes and failed designs, I went to space, and then to the poles:

Story here

I got about 40 science, and bought the next science tech, which includes the materials bay.
I chose science since there was still no rockets to chose from, and we are running out of places on Kerbin to do science.

My plane to reach space wasn't really airworthy and just kind of dropped back

I flew there after I hopped into space, since I needed the planet rotation to get above 70k, i had to launch at 90 degrees.
Then I just flew in the upper atmosphere at 1500m/s

I made it to the pole before, but the plane fell over while landing, so I fitted parachutes.

Why did you bring 3 materials bays if you were gonna transmit all the data anyways?

I took the large number of multiple items because we can't transmit beyond LoS yet.

I've tried on my own over the past week to set up a ground-based relay network, but at best, it's ridiculously launch intensive.
We need to get a rocket motor asap, even the most basic would still allow us access to Kerbinsationary, which is where we need to get three Sats.

Hopefully someone knows the tree's layout? Advice on the direction to take towards rockets would be much appreciated.

At the time I hadn't seen the last science screenshot, so I assumed you transmitted everything.
But in the case of recovery, it makes sense to take 3 material bays.
