Good colleges in the northwestern USA?
« on: November 07, 2013, 06:34:57 pm »

As a senior in high school, I probably should have already put a lot more thought into this. I live in Northern California, and I want to go to a college in either Oregon or Washington. I'm not entirely sure what I want to major in, but it's most likely computer science.

I'm not particularly worried about getting into college (a crapton of AP tests and a 2060 on the SAT help in that regard), but I still don't know where I want to go. I'm planning on applying to both Reed College and the University of Washington, but I'd like more options than just those.

So, yeah. I really don't know as much about colleges as I probably should.

Any specific direction w/ majors or interests?

I'd almost certainly major in computer science, but I'm also interested in animation and graphic design. Most of the stuff I want to do revolves around programming and art.

Hm.

I've just finished up a gap year (would be a senior if I didn't blast through HS), and am working on apps now. I was kinda tempted to apply to northwest, but I'd decided to stick to Californian schools (CalTech, UCLA, Santa Clara, Stanford, others).

I have a friend at UW. He likes it there. Good school. GL getting in from out of state though. He also applied to WWU, supposedly it's pretty good.

Hello there, I live in and go to college in the northwestern USA. For computer science, your best bet is going to be the University of Washington, hands down. It is very expensive to go there with out-of-state tuition, but you might consider acquiring residency. As for other notable schools in Washington (I don't know much about Oregon schools to be honest) here are a few:

Washington State University has quite the science department in general, but is almost expensive as UW and you have to live in the pit of despair that is Pullman.

Western Washington University is sort of like UW, since both are in the same area, but is a lot cheaper at the cost of not having a budget of literally zillions of dollars.

The Evergreen State College (where I go) is really weird, but it's the cheapest state college and I can attest to the quality of the computer science department. (Despite being a sorta-liberal-arts college, it has one of the best computer science departments in the state.) Olympia is nice if you don't mind the damp.

Eastern Washington University is pretty cheap, and Cheney is an alright place if you don't mind petty theft.

Do not go to Central Washington University unless you want to experience college life on Tatooine.

Walla Walla Community College for your first couple of years. Way cheaper, it transfers, and it's one of the best community colleges in the country.

Spokane Community College is also pretty good, if you want eastern rather than central Washington. (There is a difference!)

WWCC has a campus in Clarkston, too, but if you're north of Spokane, yeah, that's a good idea.

Just curious, is there a reason why you want to move out of state? In-state tuition in CA is pretty cheap compared to paying out of state tuition somewhere else.

UC Berkeley and UC Santa Cruz are two great schools within a neat region to explore/live in.

I am very interested in this topic and therefore shall post to watch.

I heartily recommend a college where you can pay in-state tuition. Out-of-state tuition sometimes exceeds $40000 a year, which is one reason I'm so stressed over applying :p
