New YouTube Silliness.
« on: November 07, 2013, 01:52:55 pm »

Well, as many of you probably know, YouTube just pushed it out an update yesterday that is forcing Google+ integration to use YT's major functions such as commenting and uploading videos. In doing so, they have managed to piss off a hell of a lot of people. Your thoughts?

Also, here is a petition I found for those so inclined.

It's incredibly irritating.

Has there been a youtube update that hasn't annoyed a significant number of its users?

This is groundbreaking in how annoying it is.

I approve of the removal of the comments section. From my non-signed-in perspective, the world is a much smarter place now. Of course, this paragraph is me being a pretentious ass for the sake of a joke.

Incidentally, if you use NoScript, if you can find a way to accept the entire googlevideo domain, or whatever it is, that should allow you to watch videos in peace, without having to okay new subdomains each time. ScriptSafe, in Chrome, does this with the Trust option, but it might not be worth a browser change for you. I'd recommend some variant on Chromium, if you want to not use a Google product to fix a Google problem. Although, even that is still an open-source project created by Google.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

The problem with Youtube is the same problem social networks have.  Everyone goes there because everyone else goes there.

There are other video sites but they're far smaller than Youtube.

Youtube also has the problem that it is not profitable for Google.  The vast majority (over 95%) of Google's profit comes from desktop search.  That's why all the changes- Google is trying to find a way for it to make money.

I personally never read the comments or post any, so I don't care. It's a total cesspool most of the time anyway. I did find it irritating that they decided to make gmail accounts also be a youtube/google+/whatever-the-fuck-else-they-try-to-push account, and have always been deeply disturbed by the amount of data google amasses on each of their users to then exploit willy nilly. At least they haven't cracked down on adblock ~yet~.

If YouDorf kicks off, that would be fantastic. If only Toady were also every software developer ever.

Google has been steadily integrating Youtube into their grand Google framework for years but my god is it an awful framework. Google + is absolutely terrible. They're trying to set themselves up so eventually you won't need to use any other kind of social networking site/email provider/video hosting site/search engine, you just download the chrome browser and it's all built in. You don't even need to have a real computer, just get a small, cheap laptop that forces you into an even tighter Google-box.

I really, really wish there was a better alternative to Youtube that we can rely on but we're at their mercy.

If you really want to bypass Google for Bay 12 related videos, save them to something like Dropbox for distribution or just email the video files from one to another and play them locally on some media player.

This is annoying me mostly because I'm indecisive on names.

I've been waving away the prompts to add the google+ integration for months, and apparently I'm forced to make a decision now. (Well, okay, only if I want to comment or upload stuff) My youtube name, like here, is Singularity125. But I've started using the name Takuma around, mostly for furry-related things (if my avatar didn't give that away :P) but it could be a neat name to use elsewhere, including youtube. And it's less likely that I'll have to stick numbers on the end of it to make it work. But I still have to figure out which I want to use. I know, first-world problems.  ::)

As for the data Google has on me... well, it unfortunately has my real name. Nothing beyond that, I hope... but I don't want my real name plastered on youtube for all to see.

Google's real problem is that they have no design department. If they hired some decent web designers they could probably stop this downward spiral Youtube is on.

I will once again encourage you all to download and use Youtube Center, post-haste. It makes it bearable, at least.

Pretty much this. I'm fine with death threats every day as long as I'm relatively invisible. My name up on the wall? Hell no. And in that same vein when someone speaks with their public face on they don't say what they really mean when it counts.
