Fortress gender ratio bias
« on: November 06, 2013, 04:34:54 am »

I do not intend to sound sexist, yet it has to be made clear. Every time I start a new fortress, in almost all cases (90%) the starting party is either all-females, or predominantly females. It makes it somewhat hard to roleplay dwarves (Incredibly muscular unbelievably tough slow to tire Axe lord...female).
Not that it hinders the gameplay however, but the strange reoccurences of the said fact make me wonder why...

Yeah, it's odd. Oh well. Physiological differences between dwarven women and men can be summed up with just the word "beard".

I can easily imagine an incredibly muscular, ultra-tough axe-wielding _human_ woman. With dwarfs, i just need to add a beard :P
(yes, i uncommented that line in the dwarf raws)

Thankyou for answering! Vey funny remarks, yet the question still stands: is there any way to control this? Or do I have to just live with amazon fortress?

It just seems luck has not found you, my friend. My fortress is about forty to sixty in favor of males.

Start a fort where you plan to not accept migrants and only grow your population through breeding.  Murphy's law dictates you'll end up with a situation where that is impossible.  Chances are it will be a sausage fest :p

You do sound sexist.

I would prefer my fortress to have male Dwarves because they have beards. If female Dwarves could grow beards I'd be quite happy.

You do sound sexist.

So you can say you have too many men without being sexist, but not too many women?

That's not what Sutremaine is referring to, I think, but this:

It makes it somewhat hard to roleplay dwarves (Incredibly muscular unbelievably tough slow to tire Axe lord...female).

Yes that is different. It would have been preferable had he quoted that bit though.

well if one is going to role-play every one of his dwarfs in fortress mode, the schizophrenia will kill you long before the sexism police show up

You read the second sentence of the OP, but not the third one?

I suspect your interpretation of the data is suffering from confirmation bias. 90%?

That sounds interesting... I might try and see if it will be any FUN.
