Outside wear and rust
« on: November 05, 2013, 01:06:51 pm »

I can see in the wiki http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Wear that all items left outside will wear down, but what is the rate?

I hate to have goblin gear and corpses laying around outside my fortress entrance, but since they started with invasions it is getting quite a lot of garbage to dump into the atom smasher. So how long will it take if I just left it there? A year, two maybe? or are we talking ages for stuff like armors etc?

Ps. I know I can just hide it or use dfhack to autodump it, but prefare not to.

I believe it takes on the order of decades for some material types (cloth and wood), unless you're in a freezing biome, in which case it happens in a year or two if memory serves.  I don't know if metal decays at all like this.

I always overlap garbage zone with refuse stockpile... it supposedly speeds up the process.

Anything stored in a stockpile that is set to accept refuse will decay much faster, but I'm not sure on the specifics.  Clothes still seem to rot a lot faster than creature remains for example.

That explains a lot of other problems, no more mixed refuse/other zones then :)
