Main thread here.
Greetings, Bay12. As you may know, I am running a roleplay based on wildbow's excellent web serial
Worm. It is about superheroes and -villains, and one girl who tries for the first before plunging headlong into the latter. It's worth a read.
Anyways, in that RP, a Terror (AU!Endbringer, basically a kaiju with superpowers for non-Worm-readers) is attacking! As the title indicates, the Terror is Naga, the fifth and final Terror to appear. It is a hydrokinetic serpent sixty feet long. Its most terrifying attack is its ability to ignore the Manton Effect when within around 30 feet, although the exact radius is unknown. Basically, get close enough and your blood gets ripped from your body. Oh, and Naga is also going to be pounding those farther away with blobs of water, and incidentally bludgeoning Toronto with waves of a kind not seen in the Great Lakes since it attacked Chicago, and never before then.
Against this kind of threat, superheroes and -villains from across North America and the world converge to try and drive the beast away before it can kill everyone. Helping this process are a number of massive underground shelters in Toronto and other major cities, but this is not where you come in. Where you come in is as the parahumans attacking Naga or defending the city.
Now, for those of you already in the RP, great! Your prework is done. You can start playing once we start. For the rest: Time to get to creating characters!
The process of creating characters will not be simple...from my end. From yours, it's basically answering some questions.
Character selection will NOT end once the game begins! The fight against Naga will include constant reinforcements from heroes and such around the country showing up late to the "party."
(Parts inspired by
Weaver Dice, a system vaguely based on that used by a hero to explain why not to be a villain to a bunch of schoolchildren.
It makes sense in context.Phase 0: Fill out a character sheet.
Phase 1: Next turn, I roll for a trigger event and determine powers, rolling a d22 to determine an advantage and a disadvantage to work into your power.
Phase 2: You determine how you got into a life of superheroics...or supervillainy, of a variety that would lead you to be combating Terrors in foreign cities.
Phase 3: You and your team come in.
Please keep in mind that it is usually in your interest to keep things vague enough for me to work you into any team...but if you want, you can be more specific, especially if you are not a member of the Protectorate or Wards.
Those interested in sticking around in Toronto afterwards (to an extent) have another option: They can create characters, but have them trigger
during the attack rather than before. Waitlisters in the main RP, if you want to do this just submit the cape and trigger event (see below), and link to your original submission. There we go--you're ready! If you were not, simply submit a new character sheet.
Name, Gender, Age: If any of these need explaining, check a dictionary.
Appearance: What you look like. Clothing optional--erm, you don't need to say what your clothes look like. Your character must be clothed, however, unless you have a very very very very very good excuse. At least a few words are required.
Background: Mostly optional, but I'd appreciate a few sentences at least. After all, your character had a life before becoming a cape.
Desired Power: No promises.
Cape: You are required to provide a brief description of a superhero or villain, including a codename, powers, and something to make them more...interesting. It can hypothetically be as simple as "Brass Fist. Powers: Short-ranged Pyrokinesis, Made Out of Metal. Quirk: Paranoia," or you can write something more complex. I'm a bit short on characters, since I'm trying to describe every major cape in the world, and this seems like a pretty easy way to get some more. If you object to this, let me know.
Trigger Event: In Worm, WD, and Name Pending, superheroes get their powers through a traumatic experience, referred to as a trigger event. As per the Weaver Dice rules, you are required to provide one and encouraged to come up with a second. Basically, a trigger event is an incredibly traumatic thing. It can be specific or vague, but it should be applicable to as many people as possible. Examples from Worm include being stuffed into a locker full of month-old bug-infested used tampons, rescuing one's little sister from (what is implied to be) sexual abuse at the hands of one's mother's boyfriend, being forced to walk across an area full of traps and mines after watching the last minesweeper get shot in the head after struggling against a hunting trap, and being forced into combat for your life against a mob of drug-crazed maniacs as a child. Examples from Name Pending include watching as one's sister is forced to rip the flesh from her bones (thanks to a supervillain), being buried alive, walking in on one's brain-damaged near-starved mother collapsing, being caught in a car accident that kills one's parents, and a complete destruction of one's hopes and dreams. Be creative is what I'm saying here.
You are allowed to provide multiple capes or trigger events, if you are feeling inspired or

Alright then. This is a lot of stuff. Any questions or issues?
