The Spambot Discussion Thread
« on: November 04, 2013, 06:49:23 pm »

It's come to my attention that we need a thread like this.

We get a lot of spambots. Usually they say silly things or people want to post jokes about them.
However, posting in the spambot threads causes issues for Toady. He's said that the bots aren't that much of an issue, it's just when a bunch of people post in the spambot thread that it becomes problematic when trying to deal with it.

Therefore, whenever you see a spambot thread that you'd normally want to post about and make a joke, post in here instead. You might also want to include a quote of the text or its signature (but remove the links) so people get the jokes after the original message has been deleted.

Clarification: This thread is not meant to be about discussing what we can do about the bots or proposing new systems to deal with them. This thread is specifically for moving all posts users would make in a spambot thread that would later be removed and posted here instead.

Did anyone else see that ad for fake passports? I reported it this morning and it seems to have been deleted but I hope things like that don't start showing up more often. The kitchen bots are kinda funny in their own way, but obviously illegal stuff like that could be a more serious problem.

Is anyone interested in having their kitchen remodeled?

Hopefully they don't. But if the do it's liable to start a gang war with the kitchen bots and the kitchen bots won't surrender until the passport bots are out of their territory. At least that's what will happen in my mind.

This just has to be posted. Not the first time I've posted it in a discussion here but it's just too relevant and sums up any content I'd post otherwise.

We've talked about this to death before and the ultimate conclusion was we couldn't do jack shit except ignore them, unless Toady implemented some kind of anti-spambot feature into the forums, which really isn't going to happen.

You are completely missing the point of the thread, then. This isn't about a discussion of what we can do, it's moving all of the discussion about the specific spambots away from their respective spambot threads and into here. Like the "Forgotten the name of a game" thread. The reason for this is to reduce the work that Toady has to do when he removes the threads since he said that it was problematic when people post in those threads.

Editing the main post to clarify that this is not for discussion on what to do about the bots.

It all makes me wonder if southern England is a very good place to sell kitchen appliances.

I looked on Google, and it isn't just this one forum. Apparently there are multiple forums being terrorized by kitchenbots. I have no clue, but I suspect there is a source to these spambots.

Why kitchens? Is it the new Viagra now or something?

Are they actually advertising kitchen-related products and services, or do they just lead to scam sites?

Also, Obligatory video is obligatory. Has a kitchen in it too.

Holy Christ it's like some sort of evil organization bent on world domination. Only they aren't very ambitious and only want our kitchens.
