1: It's one kind of role he plays very well. He's a great bad-guy if you want someone to root for when there's a large audience that hate the protagonists. Not saying I know for a fact - if he's not the cult leader or whatever, I'll gladly retract my predictions and wonder what the hell they'll do with this. I still wouldn't expect much, but maybe something like The Fountain.
2: Depp is the upload AI. This is from a few different sources but I'm not hell-bent on finding where they're getting it.
3: Someone mentioned wife and lab-partner. Paul Bettany is probably the lab-partner. It's the classic setup for a tragic ending to Depp's ambitions and a subsequent reconciliation with the less-tragic but more stable alternative that the bereaved widow can find solace with. In bed. I mean, I would love for them to take it in a direction, but it practically writes itself.

Just going by the trailer - the Building Danger music they're playing over the monologue, and Depp's 'hollow-eyed maniac' face at the end... I'm leaning towards Eagleon on this one. Not that trailers aren't occasionally intentionally misleading, but it's not something I'd bank on.

What I know is that I've seen people who pirated and read the leaked script saying that it is not exactly what you are afraid of it being. It could, after all, be in favor of the idea without total support (i.e. "this is good but very dangerous").

Y'know, if they took it in that direction they could have a reasonably positive ending, with Depp being trounced, and everyone just kind of moving past that point and actually learning how to use their silly gizmo properly instead of burying their heads in the sand because of one mistake. You could have Morgan Freeman laughing like a child as he explores the inner reaches of Uranus with his completely-not-AI-driven retro-styled interplanetary cruiser, comfortably distant from the bustling turmoil of the emerging noosphere on Earth. Kate Mara and Paul Bettany falling down giggling in a poppy-field with some big fuzzy adorable genetically-altered feline uplift romping around them. Just. Experiencing. Life.

Meanwhile, Depp could wait lurking in some forgotten antarctic outpost, his hollow-faced SHODAN-style glare a brief lambent hint at a sequel running some mind-blowing so-far-future-it's-fantasy sci-fi in the newly established setting, Freeman returning as the space-captain who possesses the forgotten key component of human spirit the detached but innocent Beings of Pure Light need to fight the one-time pirate - the ability to kick some ass.

Ahem. Everything in nearly every big-budget sci-fi movie builds on some horrible mistake or abused technology in the beginning, there's always this undercurrent that they shouldn't have been playing with fire to begin with, and looking at the very real and I believe quite dangerous dip in STEM graduates and general scientific literacy, it's easy to get irritated with that kind of thing being pushed by prominent role-models. So I hope you're right. And no, I'm not saying people shouldn't write that kind of thing, as a writer and as a sometimes-fan of good post-apocalyptic rag I could never say that, but it's such a common sentiment from Hollywood lately that I have trouble even believing I'll see anything else.

I'd assume that the research labs would have a big disclaimer on those trying to become Virtual Human Intelligences (Or whatever name people have made for it), like 'WARNING. YOU WILL INEVITABLY BE USED FOR PORN.'

My question would be who the royalties would go toward in a case where you've got a VHI being used for porn and its initial pattern giver still walking around. Assuming anyone's getting paid at all (And seriously, what becomes of R34 when you've regularly got whoever it's being made of actually dropping in for commenting and critique?), who gets the money? Is it split?

Would my VHI have power of attorney on me? That, in particular, would be interesting. I'm pretty sure I'd dick myself over at least once, for the giggles.

Considering the current theory of doing it involves dissecting your brain into very thin layers and scanning them, I'd go with 'No'.

But giving myself power of attorney would be complicated. I'd do it if there were no other factors, but I'm pretty sure if a fleshy me made me into a pornslave I'd hold a grudge.
