Remember the Days when we talked about playing games?

In the sense that so many of our threads are now about games that aren't yet out instead of games that we are enjoying playing. I am getting burnt out with early releases, betas, etc. Maybe I am alone in my sentiment, but I miss the days that a game would be released and we would talk about it. Now, it seems that most of the conversation is taken by games not yet out. I'm so tired of getting my hopes up.

Anyway, I do know that I can just participate in the other discussions. I just felt the need to get this off of my chest.

That's because most games we want aren't out yet. At least that's how I feel.

And then the games come out and then the hype kinda dies because there's no more anticipation, everyone's too busy playing =p

I so 100% agree with you. I'm tired of all these half finished games around right now. I'm especially tired of people asking for money for them.

The trend has moved. Instead of discovering things about the game after it's released, we discover things about the game as it moves closer to release. If you want to know the game secrets, you check the wiki. Everything about how the game is is known before we can play it. Plot is hardly even secret.

I don't think it's a bad thing. It's an exceptional time to be playing games on the PC right now. There's more games to play right now than any human possibly has time for. From casual to total mastery, there's a game out there to be played. There's everything from AAA games to beta F2Ps to indie alphas and indie gems. And if what's there isn't scratching your itch? There's every flavor imaginable of future project out there to speculate over, dream about, back or doomsay.

So I guess no, I don't miss seeing the same 4 threads of a game people have been playing for 8 or more years always being at the top. I like the pace that things come in, blow up, sink, then resurface. I get to be surprised and delighted when someone bumps one of my threads I'd forgotten about and I'm like "Oh yeah, I get to play that!"

Maybe it's just how I'm wired though. I'm juggling 4 to 5 games throughout the week, trying to play new stuff, master other stuff, play with friends or revisit classics el solo. I'm not the kind of player who will stick with just one game for 9 months.

Life as a gamer is pretty good. I just wish I didn't have to have a job to interfere with it all. And I'd like to think the reason not as many games get talked about as much anymore is because many of them don't make people feel the need to talk.

Seriously.  If I come onto a thread and see the word "kickstarter" I just go back.  I don't care anymore.  Show me a finished product and I"ll care.

I haven't had the means to play new games for a long time now. For every game that I'm heavy into, either everything has already been said or it's so old and obscure that nobody really knows enough about it to drive a conversation.

Yea I'm with you, it's so annoying to come here thinking "I might find a hidden gem", only to find so many kickstarters, projects, unreleased alphas and so on...

Not that I mind reading about those once in a while, but right now I feel like I'm always waiting for a game that MIGHT come out in 2-3 years.

Edit : actually why can't we have a child board for that ?

I find this topic funny when it's hosted on a forum about a game in development.
But yeah, it seems DF's popularity has made here a hub of indie development.
Still, there's always the 'how did you last ____' threads.

How many recent games have really been interesting? Most of them have a few hour's campaign, shooty boom boom gameplay, and after that they're done. Adventure games are hard to talk about because you spoil the gameplay itself...

I still think people discuss the games that are worth discussing, and that have long-term appeal. The KSP thread here is pretty amazing, and there's been some interesting technical discussions related to some simulation games as well. A lot of the rest comes and goes, since there's not that much strategy or thinking in modern games. Whoever goes pew pew faster wins. Yay.

I think most "gamers" have evolved into collectors and conquerors. It's more about the anticipation of games and wanting to see if they live up to the hype. For others, it's about blowing through the game as quickly as possible and then explaining to everyone else how flawed it is, usually in a condescending tone.

I think it's kind of interesting if you take a step back and compare it to the consumption of other kinds of media. When I was a kid MP3s weren't around yet so you listened to what you had which often led to the appreciation of songs that you didn't initially like. It's pretty common to see people these days listening to thirty seconds of an mp3 and then skipping through half a dozen more before listening to another one.

Easy access to such a vast assortment of games for low prices has changed the way I play games. The other day I was playing Mirror's Edge and couldn't help but wonder how many chapters were left so I could put it on my "completed" list and move on to a new experience. It's not always like that but with all of the quality games out there it's hard for a game to hold my attention for as long as one would have 10 years ago.  Nowadays If I play 10 games I might finish 3 of them, and out of those I might actually take the time to thoroughly enjoy 1 of them.

I've thought about not buying games until I go through what I have and finish them. But then there is always that exciting new game on the horizon, or that deep discount for a game that looks like it might be decent...

[group chorus]Hi, Wiles![/group chorus]

Seriously though my situation is somewhat similar (I realized the depth of it when trying to boot Borderlands 2 to go smack the boss for the silly event they're having, accidentally clicked Brutal Legend, and remembered I'd started and intended to play that some more, on top of Batman, Mark of the Ninja, and probably a half-dozen other things I got in sales or from bundles). Hell, I loved the concept (and the execution, for that matter) of Mirror's Edge, went on Summer Vacation in the middle of my playthrough, and had immediately forgotten about it on my return, whether due to my comically-stuffed backlog, new stuff, or just being pestered by others to play something (probably Warframe, at the time) I don't recall.

nenjin also hit on it - a lot of us are playing a lot of games, at least some of us not even the bleeding-edge ones (I was sort of 'out of the world' so I literally have years of games that came out when I didn't know about them or had only heard about from friends). It seems like splitting time amongst playing, hyping, and talking, talking is usually the first to go (at least for single-player games).

Of course, like a bunch of folks, I hit my saturation of 'kinda playable Alphas / kickstarters' quite a while back and continually know the disappointment of 'Oh, that sounds neat! Wait, if it's ever out, I will almost certainly have forgotten about it' when I open a thread. I'm not entirely sure it's that widespread though, as looking at the front page right now the majority of the threads are actually game discussion threads, albeit predominantly multiplayer ones.

I wouldn't say it's necessarily good or bad, but it's certainly an interesting time to be a PC gamer.
