Dwarf Fortress: The Next Version
« on: November 03, 2013, 02:09:48 pm »

Hi,

Just curious what we can expect in the next version of DF, and when it can be out? If there's a current patchnotes section, please guide me to it.

Thanks.

There's this fan-compiled changelog, note that much is regarding adventure mode.

AS for release date, Toady has stated he hopes that it'll be done and out before the end of the year, but depending on how many bugs crop up it might be delayed a bit. The original release estimate was some time in march iirc ;P

I wonder why so much push to adventure mode. I never play it, stick to dwarf management.

Probably partly for that very reason. Few have been playing it since it hasn't received much work previously. Regardless, much of the work done on adventure mode will eventually contribute to fort mode as well :>

Besides the fact that Adventurer mode needs it, another reason is that activating the world is a prerequisite for taverns and armies, but at this intermediate stage, the effects of that aren't as apparent in fort mode, especially in a way that allows extensive testing.

For example, the fact that armies now march on the world should mean that if your civ goes to war with the elves, in adventure mode that would mean there are actual armies of elves that can be seen. In fort mode it only means that the chances of being attacked depend on the proximity of your fort to elven cities.

There are a good deal of improvements for fort mode as well, such as non-destructive retirement (though I'm sure the normal abandon fort feature will still be around in case you really do have to abandon ship or other reason). While a lot of it pertains to adventure mode, the new worldgen history and revamped sites also affect fort mode.

I thought there was a few mentions here and there about being able to send out your military dorfs to lay seige to other countries, or was that just a rumor?

There is currently a minor problem in that the veteran demons fighting in the corpse factory have failed to die in the 2 year battle and have become legendary unkillable gods of war. I may have misjudged this possible outcome.

Sounds more like rumor, though I've seen those mentions here and there as well. Could have been Toady One or someone talking about you having your adventurer visit the retired fort and recruit the elite soldiers.

From what I remember it was supposedly an upcoming feature for fortress mode.

Sending armies out in fort mode is a future goal, but probably not for another few versions. Some of the stuff worked on now is laying the groundwork for that though, hence why it's been mentioned here and there.

Because it wasn't developed much for 10 years before he started focusing on it just a year and a half ago.

Honestly looking forward to the the expansion on adventure mode and do think this improvement is an all around necessity.  I can understand people who are like "meh" because the changes to fort mode are minor, but survival rogue-likes (like don't starve and unreal world) are ridiculously fun, and adventure mode definitely needs the love.  Can't wait to roll up a ranger marksdwarf and build a hunting lodge out in the middle of nowhere.

A lot of people are excited to be able to non-destructively retire a fort because oftentimes a fort is abandoned not because of !!FUN!!, but because you get bored with it or get FPS death and the fort is usually perfectly functional. That is a pretty major change for fort mode IMO.

I'm especially looking forward to changing the world history with my actions, now that the history continues during gameplay. Having more tactical combat is also an awesome plus, getting DF yet another step closer to a turn-based battle choreography simulator I've always dreamed of.

This scene immediately reminded me of the new combat system:
