Labelling Unfamiliar Maps: THE CARTOGRAPHENING
« on: November 02, 2013, 11:46:14 pm »

So there's been an image of a map of the US with states labelled by an Australian with very limited geographical knowledge doing the rounds on the 'Net recently, and I though it might be fun for us to generate some of our own geographical trainwrecks, labeling the political divisions of places we've never been and know little about, or even those we have.

So download a map, open it up in Paint and add labels of what you think goes where. If you get frustrated, hey! Take it out on the map, it's what got you into this mess, after all. Post your results here and we'll all have a good laugh and maybe even learn something along the way.

I can find more maps on request, though if you want you can just google 'wikimedia unlabelled map of X' and post it your own damn self, which'd probably be faster.

Oh, and don't check an actual map beforehand if you can help it; this is all about our misconceptions, not our ability with Google Images. (you can check a list of states or countries or whatever, though)

That Europe map was a little out of date, but I did what I could.  Canada's rectangular states in the west are almost as confusing as America's, and I'm perfectly willing to admit that I bombed Australia.  ^_^

Think I got most of them right, although I blanked on a few countries near Austria/Czechoslovakia.

Although then I got bored.

I did each map. The USA is probably the worst, I had to refer to a list to even remind myself of Delaware's existence. My god it's bad.

Australia was entirely guesswork, I had no idea.

I think Europe may be my strongest but I am fearful of the other three. Canada I'm probably very, very wrong when I go West, the USA I'm all over the place, Australia god knows.

EDIT:

Your Idaho is my Missouri! I remembered in the movie "The Missouri Breaks" Jack Nicholson went to Canada so I just presumed.

Damnit, I forgot Cyprus. It's the little island below Turkey obviously.

Well, you only got two wrong for Australia. It helps half the country is conveniently labelled, though.

Never mind, I thought he was going to try for "in all of us command" again. I presume, based on the present evidence, that I was misinformed.
