Complete Deinocheirus skeleton found
« on: November 02, 2013, 07:05:55 am »

Previously, all we knew of Deinocheirus was that it was a very large dinosaur, presumably related to Ornithomimus, with 6-feet long arms. Now we've got a full skeleton.

Apparently, our previous views on Deinocheirus as a plant-eater were wrong. If the source is true, then Deinocheirus could be the largest apex land predator to ever live.

Holy beeper.

NOTE: The skeleton is yet to be described, so there isn't much info. If it IS true, though....
NOTE2: This one is April Fools, the real Deinocheirus is described a bit further down

Okay, added a note. It will be extremely annoying if it's made up, but I can remember hearing about it before. I'll go have a look for it...

Dangit. Someone else pointed that out, too. It'd probably be a good idea to delete this now.

Actually, there are in fact two new partial skeletons that provide pretty much everything except the skull and feet. I just got back from the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology annual meeting where the discoveries were presented. I can post the abstract of the talk if someone wants. A description has been posted to National Geographic here, but unfortunately you'll need to register and the image at the top of the page doesn't actually represent what was found; other sources will soon appear now that the meeting is over. Long story short, it looks something like the offspring of a therizinosaur and a dromedary camel, with a long neck, a narrow chest, a triangular sail from the mid torso to the base of the tail peaking just before the hips, a sort of upright hunchbacked posture even without the sail, and stocky hind legs. The dimensions are about 11 m long by 5 m tall.

makes the skull of Tarbosaurus look maniraptoran in comparison.

This is now THE mega-theropod of the Mesozoic.

Maybe I've been watching too much Tim and Eric but I'm getting this vibe from the article that the people are subtly joking with the way they talk and write.

Also hooow biiiig?!  They never say!

As discussed later in the topic, that's an April Fools that I was fooled by. The REAL new Deinocheirus skeletons show it was a highly robust herbivore with a small sail or hump on the rear of the back.

I recommend an edit in the first post warning that the article is fake.

Ooh, real news in a thread about fake news. Also I'm viewing the National Geographic article without registering and there are no problems. Just a popup when I opened the page.

Anyway, these two seem closer to the real thing, courtesy of Deviantart's apparently awesome community of people who draw dinosaurs.

What?

Absolutely DREADFUL black and white movie

And proof that just because something was popular at the time, it doesn't mean it was objectively good.

It features a meat eating Deinocheirus AND Stego
