I finally succumbed and reinstalled JA2 with 1.13... and every time I do so it's like a brand new game. So many new features and probably dozens of new ways for me to screw up and die. Really liking the new IMP creation screen though.

Just started playing again and... for the first time I got an error... on the first map no less. Odd.

I started playing again, without Tons of Guns this time. So far, so good. :) But I'm having a weird and frustrating problem. I have two mercs sitting in a town sector, one of them playing Doctor and the other practicing a skill. When the sector gets attacked, the red window automatically selects "auto-resolve" without me clicking it, leading to their deaths and the deaths of the militia I just this second trained. How can I stop it from doing this??

Never had this problem, but I assume that mercs have to be not currently engaging in a certain skill and just sitting in their sector doing nothing to be able to defend against an attack.

I can't say I have ever had that. I'm pretty sure whenever my Merc's got attacked while doing some skill I could go into the battle normally. Are you playing vanilla or using 1.13 mod?

1.13 mod. I've reloaded a few times and it still happens. I'll try leaving everyone idle and see if that helps.

Edit: So yeah, turns out that's what it was. I guess technically if they're assigned to anything other than "On Duty" then the game treats it as if there are no Mercs defending the territory, and because militia were present, the battle was forced into auto-resolve.

I understand that the different ammo types are realistic, that just isn't a good enough reason for all the extra bloat in my opinion. It just means you end up spending more time on things that are less fun, like scrolling through 8 pages in Bobby Rays store.

If I remember correctly, going without the tons of guns options also removes a lot of attachments, which is why I always left it on.

You've got a significant number of attachments in 1.13 which are mostly redundant as well. Apparently in vanilla JA2 Tons of Guns would simply add or remove the Soviet guns that used the seperate Warsaw Pact ammo and had, by and large, a seperate set of attachments.

That's the best bit of detail I could find on what the setting actually does except that there is a flag in the 1.13 files and each gun with the tons of guns flag is left out or included based on the setting and those without the flag are in there no matter what.

I have a bit of an issue with Jagged Alliance 2: Gold. I've just taken all of Drassen. I'm about to take Alma, but if I go anywhere but the most direct route, the game crashes. I have tried installing patches, but none of them helped. The 1.12 patch made the game just not run at all. Has anyone else encountered this issue?

If you've got the gold version, it should be updated as far as vanilla can be officially. Unfortunately this isn't the most stable game, even fully patched. I've personally run into bugs here and there which because of the way the game is setup require me to revert to a previous save or do something drastically different.

This is pulling old smudgy files out of the dusty section of my memory, but from what I remember, and I'm only half remembering, half pulling out of my ass, but the RNG seeds are stored in your save file and while you're playing are based on your previous actions. You can see this in action if you save in a battle, move a character in a certain way and watch the enemy's reaction. If you load that save, and move your character in exactly the same way, the enemy should respond exactly the same way again. Now if for whatever reason, the current RNG seed forces the game into a bugged state, you'll have to sort of force the game to switch to a different seed. If the bug is far enough out, you can just do that by doing something significantly different as you play. If not, you might just have to revert to an older save. Something that drastic doesn't happen that often to me, but it's still happened enough that I'm more careful than usual about having multiple saves and saving often for games I care about and have a lot of time invested in.

I'd also suggest, just for your own fun sake(unless you know what you're doing) picking a different place than Alma to head to next.

Yea keep a fair number of saves, 'cause there were definitely a few killers left in there.  At least a few to do with vehicles that I recall, one I remember is something about trying to move 2 vehicles together.  Then I remember a couple other crashes that repeatable, but could be prevented by changing vehicle or squad movement.   Definitely a few to do with the prize fight and movment in Meduna - not crashes but glitches that could prevent further fights, or block you in or out of the bar.

Oh and there's 2 autosaves, but I think you had to do something in the config file to turn those on.   And they're not accessible from the reload screen, either there's some funky key combo or you have to manipulate the save files outside of the game.

Still one of my favorite games of all time.

The biggest frustration I'm currently experiencing is how every battle devolves into turn-by-turn savescumming, unless I setup like this:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

In which case I usually only need a few saves per battle. It's very exploitative of the AI, though.

I hate savescumming, but I'm just not seeing any other possible way to get through the early game. I do have the difficulty one notch above Experienced, though, so perhaps that's why everyone with a .38 pistol has 90% accuracy from 10+ squares away.

Well yeah it's the bug bear of most games that the increased difficulty just narrows playstyle more, you can mod the game to try and tailor it more to how you want it though, like maybe play on higher difficulty but then start with more money etc...

The camping waiting for them to come around the corner is a classic tactic, of course sometimes they seem to learn to avoid this and wait for you to come out instead.

Well, yeah that's about what you have to do if you're early in the game, ESPECIALLY with Barry and Ira at low levels.  The only alternatives are:
- bigger team, hide behind buildings, wait for guys to come to you and STILL gonna need a fair amount of shots.
- custom merc takes Night Ops, hire a night ops guy or 2, and Rule The Night.  Run away during the day 'til you've picked up some skills and gear.(actually good advice in general - don't get cut off from an edge of the map that you can escape from).
- hire some badass guys with badass gear for a day or 2 to help you with the early killing.  Problem with this is that THEY get the kills and the xp, and the skill bumps from successes and then that will go away with them when they leave. (Make sure you take their gear before they leave).

My way to abuse the early game:

Are you playing 1.13? Enemies climb the roof and shoot down on me or go around the building in order to flank me.
