2 of the games i play does not seem to have a dedicaced thread :
the anno-like open source game Unknown Horizons
the real time tactical wargame Armored Brigade
and being too lazy to create a thread about them myself probably does not help :D

Certainly less obscure than the others here, but I've been contemplating starting a Rune Factory 4 thread. Seems like it'd interest a lot of people here, but maybe not.
Seems rare that threads about portable games appear, myself would love to play RF4 but i dont have the 3DS.

Hm, I guess that's true. They have a higher cost of entry than normal console games, which are probably gonna be ported to at least one console you already own. Pokemon, as always, is the glaring exception :P But if you have a normal DS, RF3 is decent too. Good luck finding it anywhere but amazon though.

Magic Carpet by bullfrog... <3

Ah, this one is fun too, but I rarely get past the fourth or fifth level without either losing interest or getting my butt handed to me. Incidentally you reminded me of another game... Master of Magic anyone? :)

Master of Magic is not really unnoticed on this board, it comes up from time to time in various of the 4x/heroic fantasy based subjects here, and i remember there was even a dedicaced thread for it a couple of years ago.
Though the discussion was oddly never as popular as it is for the more or less recent clones of it.

We know MoM. MoM is great. That's that. But the recent clones have potential. They're probably so-so ok, but they could be MoM^3. It's the potential that excites conversation.

That's my theory anyway.

But hey, namedropping time!
Tangentially related to the above, there are three games that make sure Dosbox stays on my machine: MoM, X-COM and...
Sword of the Samurai
You're a lowly samurai lord who must through skill and guile work his way up clan hierarchy to become the Shogun of all Japan. Mostly decent minigames and challenging difficulty are things that keep on giving. If you die it's game over unless you had a son to inherit you. So you'd better find a babymaker before doing the more dangerous missions. It's the sort of game I'd like to see remade and expanded. Kind of like Pirates in a way.

Armageddon Empires
A very niche turn-based strategy game. You assemble or use a default deck of cards. Buildings, units, heroes, everything is cards. This adds a bothersome luck element into the game (or a minigame of deck weighting, if you will) because at various points in the game you want various cards to play. It does play a lot with resources. Time, humans, material, energy and tech are all important but scarce resources. It actually fits the post apocalyptic theme if you ask me. The battles are conducted with dice rolls. Various heroes and abilities and other extras may influence the dice, but ultimately it's about the dice. Late game unit balance is also a thing that bothers sometimes since "much dice>little dice".
I don't know. It's not a game that I can honestly recommend. On the other hand it's superfun and awesome game.

The dev is actually working on some Lovecraftian detective/roguelike-ish game but I'm pretty sure we have a thread about that.

Guessing, because I never played the original one.
The second was a pirate game, with different gameplay.
3 and 4 were quite easy.

played Rf1-3 with emulators, 3ds does not have one yet and i do not feel like buying a 3ds just for one game.
How is it compared to the previous ones anyway?

The only Tropico I've ever played was the first one.  Pretty good.  Reminded me a bit of SimIsle, though more polished.

Less (no) time gating and a lot more post-story content. Mechanics and whatnot are still pretty much the same. I'm quite enjoying it.

And one thing I was REALLY glad not to see... that whole 'must get married' thing in RF...2? that prevented me from progressing, since the beau I liked was ridiculously hard to raise their affections...

I never see Final Fantasy Tactics Advance mentioned on here. IMO it's better than 99% of games from the main numbered series, and the last 1% is saved purely because I played them at a young age and have a severe case of rose-colored glasses. Although nowhere near as tough as Fire Emblem, it still gets pretty crunchy near the end. Grinding is never a bore, since there's plenty of sidequests and you only start running out when you probably don't need them anymore.

However, it does fall to a problem that most Final Fantasy games have: you'll have your favorite party of six with two backups, and everybody else will be 20 or more levels under. You can always dismiss underpowered characters and recruit new ones at a more suitable level, but you lose any abilities they may have gained. Be careful not to let story characters get underleveled though, since you're forced to use those in many storyline missions.

That's my main beef with many party RPGs. I really liked how (for ex.) in KOTOR all characters gained xp at the same rate even when outside your party. I could use who I wanted when I wanted without feeling underleveled. In FF and the like I feel like I'm locked to my initial party because they're the ones I use, and therefore the ones with the highest levels.

I feel like the whole xp-through-use (whether it's skills or party members being used) should just go die in a fire. It doesn't encourage varied play and is therefore boring.

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance has a boring plot, one dimensional characters, and lacks challenge.

It is, however, a great time waster and it's perfect for people who want to go around collecting everything and finishing all the sidequests.
