I never hear people on about I-War/Independence War much.

Its the game that got me into space sims years ago and still nothing has came close for drawing me in since.  Lots of variety of missions and sim like physics with real weight and inertia vs arcade turning on rails without drift on newer space games.  you could also take control of any station on the bridge or manage damage control for the ship.

Played it a few times then again when the 3dfx glide patch came out lol.

The 14 minute intro is worth a watch alone.

As a space junkie, I've never given much attention to I-war, but hat video made it look kinda cool, i might give it a try. The campaign story looked promising there, but does it keep it that way? And is it well meshed with game mechanics? (like comparing to titles like homeworld, nexus incident or freespace that had a great "package") Also is I-war 2 any good ?

Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones

the only GBA game that made me feel for characters. The plot was also darkly intriguing, this one doesn't get enough love I think!

The old "Warlocked" game for the GBcolor.

Did anyone else play that? It was like the only proper RTS made for the GB.

Battlefield 4 was a recent release, though I don't see any threads on it. May be too EA for most people who frequent this forum, though. I'm having a blast with friends playing it as a Recon/Anti air specialist; my everything else needs some work though, and I'm not a really good player, just have bouts of skill and/or luck when sniping rather than consistency.

Solstice Arena is another interesting game I don't see a thread on yet, and I might just start one. It's kind of a League of Legends/DotA lite, for both PC and iOS devices, with a focus on hero vs hero rather than farming creeps for the first twenty minutes of the game. A good distraction here and there, but too obviously meant for tablets to look good on a PC, and from what I've seen PC players tend to stomp the touchscreen people due to a greater ability to control their characters. Reminds me more of a very stripped down version of Angel Arena from Warcraft 3 rather than a real MOBA.

Drain Storm. It's preeeetty old simple roguelike. I played it back in 2007 and had tons of fun with it. Unfortunately, it's so old that I can't play it on my current computer. :(
But anyway, I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere despite how easy it is to pick up. But I guess it's because it was last updated in 2001. :\

Wait, BF4 is out?

As of last week, Tuesday.

It's currently a bit of a buggy mess out of beta, but very playable and very fun. Losing the entire progress of a game due to a crash is not, however. Stay away from Siege of Shanghai Conquest/Obliteration maps, because if you're rendering the collapsable center tower when it comes down, you will most likely crash along with half the other players on the server, generally resulting in a curb stomp battle one way or another...

Then again, it is DICE's track record (and games in general these days) to release first, and patch later. I find it odd that the beta didn't experience the crashing issue on that map, given it was the only map available to play at the time. Weird sound bugs (such as all sound cutting completely out for everything except what you are shooting at the time) and late game, serverside lag/stutter on certain other maps also tends to be prevalent.

Oh yes, along with the sim like physics and systems damage that sees you losing different aspects of control until left drifting in space, along with the branching story and a load of non combat missions keeps it at the top of space sims for me.

I never played much of I War 2 as its story didnt interest me.  In IW 1 you play as a ship commander in the military and the missions are on a semi linear path, in IW 2 its more free roaming but you dont start in the military or with a decent ship and it felt dumbed down a bit.

Its the sim physics that i liked the most and nothing feels cooler than strafing past giant ships blasting them using just inertia to glide past while keeping aim.

I never played IWar1 but I was recommended IWar2 while keeping up with Infinity:TQFE (a game that I don't hear talked about, but because at this point it is largely vaporware, that's no surprise). I don't really have much to compare it to; while I liked some of the space sim elements (travel in particular), and it is ostensibly a sandbox (you can merc, pirate/steal, trade while commanding a small fleet), I was very disappointed in the extremely limited ship selection and ship customization (in terms of equipment). I don't know if I just didn't get far enough in the story or if you really are limited to only about four ships and those are all pretty much direct upgrades.

... non combat missions ...
I'm sold. Military sim that has done non combat missions must have good campaign. Don't have time to play right now so on wishlist it goes (6$ on gog).
From some reviews and videos i see that it has only semi realistic physics (like flying in water), but its k, not every game needs to be KSP :P. And strafing looks fun (i wonder if you can set some autopilot to try to orbit enemy like in Eve hehe).

Also Infinity:TQFE <_>. Looks nice but idk, maybe something will come out of this (website was updated 2 months ago) ... but i guess not before Star Citizen crashes and burns :P.

It's been in development for years and just one guy. So far it's really just a pretty planet sim. I don't think we'll actually get a game out of it from I-Novae Studios (well, there's already the deathmatch/multiplayer net-code-test "alpha" thing released, like, two or three years ago) but maybe he can finish the engine and sell it and we'll get something out of the buyer.

There's lots of promise but just promise.

I don't know why he changed his forums, they're pretty shite now.

G-police generally gets praise as a side-mention, but I've never seen anyone really focus on it. Which is a shame because it really was quite fun. Even though I never actually progressed past the second hub area room.

I War 2 was a bit different from IW 1.  I War 1 was mostly linear focused story with a few branching missions revolving around the commander you play and playing in a warzone or hostile areas.  It still used the same tech and open play areas as IW 2 but there was nothing in it except for mission related things, no sandbox or trading as such.

I War 2 tried for a sandbox free roaming/trading sort of thing but lacked content to fill it and the story was a bit dull for the couple of hours i played.  IW 1 had one of the best space game stories imo.

G police was fun :), although I too didn't progress much in it. But it did make me remember another game that i never finished, Swiv3D. And that gave me a thought. Maybe some games are forgotten because they were too hard while not offering enough at the end. Swiv was pretty good for its times with some innovative elements, (early 3d, ground and air combat etc.) but it was reeeally hard so it slipped into obscurity.

I am using this thread to post about a game I think is pretty neat so far but don't care enough to make a thread! Extra Solar is this weird ARG-like thing where you remotely control a rover on a distant alien world and take photos to unravel the mysteries there, while also uncovering a conspiracy to hide things from you. You can check it out at extrasolar.com

There's some f2p transaction stuff but none of it is super important, although you can take photos only once every 4 hours which I think is a way of abstractly simulating the lag between earth and space so I don't mind it. You can pay to do it once per hour, among other things.
