Sublight- has anyone heard of this game?
« on: November 01, 2013, 04:47:02 am »

http://www.desura.com/games/sublight

Basically, you manage a spaceship which travels at sublight speeds (hence the name) through the universe
The premise seems interesting,  but I'm unsure as to how decent the game actually is (and while I don't mind alphas now and then, I don't rush headlong into them either)
So, has anyone tried it?

Could just do Elite II as well although I don't think you can go to different star systems without jumping, mainly because it takes decades to do at sublight speed and in Elite your spaceship will break before then and you probably won't have enough fuel either though it might be possible I dunno.

I don't really get the concept - what's so great about sublight speed? Either the stars have to be closer together, which makes the distinction between speeds meaningless, or the game will end up like Journey to Alpha Centauri (In Real Time).

I wonder if the game has become odd.

Maybe it's not in real time? A lot of games sound stupid if you think they are played at real time speed (for example who the hell has the 50'000 years for a game of Civilization? ;D) If I'm right, I think a generation ship sim would be pretty cool.

I tried to play chess but two of my opponents were playing competitive checkers as a third person walked in with Game of Thrones in hand confused cause they thought this was the book club.

Well, since time and space are entangled, one could argue that speeding up time means traveling faster than light... :P But yeah, I didn't think of time acceleration.

More on topic, is there a demo or something for this?

no demo, the game isnt well thought out but it is earlier alpha so they might get it right, smells like one of those projects that will get money and then at a later point not follow through or a half finished game in 12 months will be the result

Haven't heard about the game, but will through in a comment on relativity.

If you travel close enough to the speed of light you could get to any point in the universe as quickly as you want - from your personal frame of reference, however to 'everyone else' you would still seem to take years or more.

Of course the rate of acceleration required to reach even the nearest stars within a reasonable time period for real time play would be absurd.  Think energy sources larger than the sun, and astronauts (and probably even the strongest spaceships) turned into mush by the force.

Thats exactly what is preventing me to take a deeper look. From what i can see right now, too many alarms is ringing.

that was a luky dwarf. I had one dabbling surgeon fail so spectacularly that the patient skull flew a tile away from the table.

DF doesn't mold players into its image - DF merely selects those who were always ready for DF.

Minecraft UI is very simple. There's only so many ways you can implement "simple" without copying something. We also gonna complain that it uses WASD?
