Waxed Leather
« on: November 01, 2013, 03:21:02 am »

1.  There's not much that can currently be done with wax gathered from hives.  It can only produce low-value crafts.
2.  I'm tired of my dwarves' gear getting covered in blood/water/ichor/vomit/forgotten beast syndrome.
3.  People in the real world put wax on leather to better resist most of the items mentioned in point 2.  They've been doing this for hundreds of years.

Therefore, I propose that wax may be added to leather the same way dyes may be added to cloth.  This combination would increase the value of the leather and prevent contaminants from remaining on any article of clothing the waxed leather may be turned into.  There is nothing more to my suggestion; it is just a simple and useful addition to the game.

This seems like a simple, easy and worthwhile suggestion. +1

I would prefer to use the leatherworking skill for it.

We have rubber trees in this game and thus can extract latex to make the gear mist-resistant; we can also use oil for this use.

Wax can also be used for candles - both for light and for offering to gods and other worshipped beings.

I also hope that items with weird specifications will be useful in magic, for example voodoo dolls.

Urist McHooDoo stabs the *pigtail cloth voodoo doll* in the right leg!
Urist McAsshole is stabbed in the right leg by unknown forces, tearing the skin, tearing the muscle and chipping the bone.

Just theoretical...

Sounds totally awesome.
Voodoo dwarves sound like a reasonable thing.

Oh look, I have a steam account.
Might as well chalk it up to Pathos.
As this point we might as well invoke interpretive dance and call it a day.

If we can do that, then it should be considered that we can also create cuir bouilli. Normal leather doesn't offer the protection cuir bouilli can, and in reality should probably be as strong as copper armor (unless it's studded).

I like this idea, but if we're waxing leather, why not start waxing cloth as well? We know that rubbing wax into cloth was a common form of waterproofing in the periods Dwarf Fortress is based on, and we even have some recipes  from period manuscripts.

Cool, but wouldn't this likely lead to tongues having a '[SPEACH]' tag, and thus via necromancy we would have nearly unkillable reanimated tongues following necromancers spamming 'it is sad but not unexpected'?
