Why do gods only ever make abominations? Shouldn't some gods reward true believers with abilities like healing the sick or put evil spirits and undead to rest?

These prophets would use their social skills and super-powers to convert the needy to their gods.

Sometimes different prophets would be servants to opposing deities and incite holy wars, sometimes they would try to impose church-states complete with inquisition-like organizations and some would just be wandering preachers going wherever they are needed to spread the good word. There's a lot of possibilities.

Right now the only walking deities are clowns who have run away from the circus and use their deadly abilities juggling to impersonate as a deity. The gods of dorf fortress don't seem to be so benevolent, either: they create necromancers, werebeasts, and vampires.

Still, it'd be interesting to see at least SOME benevolent deities. Probably not walking. But maybe they could bless a particularly faithful humanoid and then that humanoid is seen as some kind of Saint, Prophet, or Deity entirely.

THE POSSIBILITIES OF STORIES ARE BLOWING MY MIND OH GOD
Do you think we could create a Bible out of Dwarf Fortress? Maybe?

'And the lord stood upon the mound of goblin carcasses and he spake. And what he spake was thus "Blessed are the meek, for they shall be spared from military duty. And blessed are the Cheesemakers for they shall be turned from the halls of Boatmurdered. Blessed is the cat that dwells not among Dwarves, for it shall not be destined to become -cat leather mittens-. Now bring me some *Plump Helmet Roast* and a barrel of mead for I must break my fast, and I invite you all to come and sit with me and together we shall eat of the bounteous = CatTallow Biscuit=." Thus spake the lord Urist and so it was.'

There once was a dwarf in a cave,
who many would consider brave.
With a head like a block
he went out for a sock,
his ass I won't bother to save.

Being given necromancy by a god is considered a gift in DF :) at least from the perspective of the donor/recievor, but not those around them.

That's my point, really. Gods seem to only want to bless grim loners with the power to creep people out. Why not pick charismatic people who would use their awe inspiring powers to gather (live) followers for the gods who bestow these very powers. Maybe they'd grow more powerful as their cults grow.

They can already make books. Maybe they could make holy scriptures too. Dwarfs would spread these around along with their faith. Maybe dwarfs of a different faith would try to burn these books... This a whole other idea but I think it goes well with this religion thing.

For obvious reasons all the grim stuff already added are the kind of things that give much added FUN without needing that many underlying systems created to support it, hence probably why they made it in early. Religion requires a lot more work and features to be complete enough to add anything to the mix. Also, the following relevant tidbits can be found in the old dev pages:

"PowerGoal86, THE PROPHET OF AA, (Future): The Church of Aa has become decadent and gifts to the deity have waned, and the priests have been filling their coffers. You appear and claim to be a prophet and say that Aa has abandoned the Church. The priests scoff at you, but you perform a miracle, and there is a schism in the Church and much violence."

"PowerGoal139, A BATTERY OF AA MECHANICS, (Future): You receive the holy relic of Aa from a manifestation of the deity. You bring it to the Temple of Aa and set it on the altar. People dance as you chant the prayer of Aa. Word spreads quickly that a prophet of Aa has arisen, and the religion of Aa sweeps throughout the land."

"PowerGoal113, DIVINE INTERVENTION, (Future): You are playing goblin ball in the arena when your son yells "dad! dad! goal! goal!". Your son had been praying all day just so that you would win. Your kick is short, but the god Markad manifests and finishes the kick."

"PowerGoal125, SPEAR OF THE GODS, (Future): The gods of life and death have been at war since the beginning of time. The regions of the world are set in opposition, and creatures are occasionally born with affinity for one force or the other. You are born as a servant of death and claim the great barbed spear from the highest peak where it had sprung forth from the mutual hatred of the gods."
