Sandstorm Trick Room?
VoltTurn?
Everyone Gets Batons?

Geez, no wonder I'm no good. There's all these strategies I never learned.

Sandstorm Trick Room?
VoltTurn?
Everyone Gets Batons?

Geez, no wonder I'm no good. There's all these strategies I never learned.

As far as these strategies/themes go, it's basically "look at a move or certain types of moves with special effects, and think of stuff that goes well with it".  Trick Room works well with slow Pokemon, since it reverses speed.  Sandstorm works well with Rock, Ground, and Steel, most of which also tend to be slow (even Scizor, which only manages speed due to priority moves).  VoltTurn is basically just using Volt Switch and U-Turn (hit the enemy, switch out) to rack up residual damage while switching in counters, though I'm not sure how it's especially synergistic with Rain/Swim.  Baton Pass teams are...well, check Praefectus' all-bug team in the other thread to see how he combined BP with a fun theme: boost up stats, then give them to something that uses those boosts to beat face.

That said, some moves work better in this respect than others.  Certainly, creating a Gravity team with normally-inaccurate moves is plenty entertaining, but it's not nearly as effective as some other options.  The tricky part, I think, is figuring out how to get them to work effectively; it's something I've never managed.  Not to mention figuring out the moves in the first place, especially if you're new, but that'll come with time and experience. ^_^

Those are all made up strategies that just sorta go well together. VoltTurn in Rain just has some good pokes with it who can make good use of both, such as Scizor and etcetera, mostly just to show unorthodox. A Gravity-Sunny Day Team would be interesting.

I'd recommend against baton pass teams in competitive play. They are shut down very easily by any opponent worth his salt. I see most baton pass teams ragequitting the moment I bring out Skarmory, which is one of my staples in actually competitive teams. But I don't really play competitive anymore. I actually prefer gimmicky teams, with themes that are based on the pokemons appearance and attributes, rather than move-strategies, like my magical girl team.

Mine is indeed theme-based. They are all bug-types, and it doesn't exactly only depend on scolipede, as you probably saw on most of videos,Veno, Dustox and Volca were the ones making last stands after getting quiver dancer stacks on max. The most pleasant part of going with a theme is when you actually manage to win anyway. Like when Volcarona managed to take down everyone including talonflame on a match. People left on countless matches after losing their precious charizard against hera with spd and atk bonus, giving two or 1-hit KO with rock blast.

Also I just use the OU one. [And still need a theme...]

Mono-Type is a rather common theme though, more common than mono-eevee even. anyway, come to arts and crafts, the magical girls haven't had a lot of battling for a while

NU-tier battle

I wonder why he forfeited? I mean, he probably would have taken down Charizard within another turn or two, and I didn't faint any of his 'mons yet.

My bet is that his strategy depended on that golbat. I lost the count of times people left after only losing one pokemon, mostly their super-herp-derp charizard Y or X, that or Garchomp.

That's why any good Baton Pass team has Espeon. :D Or possibly Cradily.

And just because a theme is common doesn't mean it's bad. But I don't play to ladder anyway.

Mr. Mime is surprisingly useful for Baton Pass teams too. Soundproof + Substitute and screens is really nice.

Edit: Also, a fair amount of the time when people forfeit for no reason it's just because they had to go. It's relatively low impact, so people just leave sometimes, if they have to.

The moment the lever was pulled, somebody's pet kitten stepped onto the bridge. I read somewhere that if a cat falls more than 11 stories, it instinctively flares its legs out to increase air resistance. This slows it down enough to stick the landing with relatively minor injuries. In Dwarf Fortress, apparently, cats don't do that.

Tonight really isn't a great time to fight, I just faced people using that strategy of thunder wave+swagger+substitute at least seven times, then people spamming roar to slowly take down my team, and then spikes+whirlwind. And to my bug team.. that is death sentence.

Malamar
Mega Aggron
Skuntank
Umbreon
Vaporeon

the list is a joke though

Tried to create a poison team, first attempt was a close shot.

Also I am still trying to come up with a theme. :v

Edit: Now that is some unstable server.
