You are entering a world of knights, castles, and monsters. Three of you have been born into the knightly class. Knights serve many different roles in their world. There are several knight archetypes available, your choice effects your starting conditions, and the possible tasks you can take on.
The courtly knight is well acquainted with the social game. He finds himself at home weaving among courtly women and fighting in tournaments. His main assets are his ability to gain support for his endeavors by impressing people. However, these knights tend to be inept in the rough and tumble world of real combat.
These knights have lands to tend to. They often feel in service to those living on their land, and have to devote large amounts of time to their land. They do benefit from the labors of those they protect though.
These are wandering knights, serving the good of all. They take on roles from hunting monsters, to serving different kingdoms in their wars, for a fee. They are often looked down upon by courtly individuals, and they lack the resources of landed knights, but they are experienced in combat and often benefit the most from their own successes due to their isolation.
No knight can do it alone, however. Each knight has a squire, with different abilities.
This squire is characterized by religious devotion, which can help elevate the knight's status in the eyes of others, as well as giving special relationships with religious institutions.
This type of squire cares for the knights equipment and horses, helping keep swords sharp and ready, and armor polished. Nearly a prerequisite for having a horse.
This type of squire can find information about the surrounding area, as well as giving the knight extra information on opportunities before they pursue them.
You can apply to be a knight or a squire. I will accept the first three knights, after that they will go on a wait list. Each knight will choose one squire, and these pairs will spend the game together. Unpicked squires will go on the wait list. For those on the wait list, there may be a point when a knight dies and needs to be replaced, or where a knight gets a chance to take on an extra squire.
Name= Self Explanatory
Gender= You are male if you are a knight, only because I'm trying to be pseudo-loyal to an actual time period, if you are a squire you can choose.
Role= Which knight or squire are you
Fighting specialty (if a knight, choose 2 for Arthurian) = Choose from: Spear (+1 versus mounted), Sword/Ax (+1 versus light armored), Warhammer (+1 versus heavy), Mace (+1 versus undead), Glaive (+1 versus beasts)
Field Ability (if squire) = Choose from: Hunting (no penalty while using bow), Tracking (+2 to finding correct path), Thieving (+1 to lockpicking and pickpocketing), Trapping (+1 to spotting and disarming traps), Herbalist (+1 to collecting and identifying herbs)
Squire (if a knight) = Choose your squire. You can leave this blank till there are more available.
Usual d6 rules apply to every action.
Role will change interactions with NPC's in many different ways, sometimes adding a modifier, sometimes making some outcomes either inevitable or impossible.
Combat will be d6 for each actor to determine whether or not a hit is scored, followed by a roll to check for block if opponent has a shield, or sufficient ability in a weapon to block with that, followed by a d6 roll for degree of damage. Chunky salsa. If outcome is not a strike by the initiating actor, a counterstrike will be rolled. Depending on the rolls for the hit chance/block and the abilities of the attacked individual, a bonus may be applied to this counterstrike.
All squires receive a minus one to all combat rolls. If a bow is used there is no counterstrike chance. If the squire does not directly engage an opponent they will not be attacked. The knight will always be attacked by his opponent once spotted.
The characters in the game are far from immortal, and there will (in all likelihood) be death. However, I’d like it if the game had some kind of overall progress, so that despite the fact that characters will die, land will be lost, and (depending on the stakes of the characters actions involved) nations will die, it can feel like we are moving forward. I’d like to do this through the development of new archetypes. This would allow new characters to choose from new classes, and at the moment it is unlocked all current characters would have the one time opportunity of switching to the new archetype, for those who had very recently (i.e. <5 turns) entered play. I’m thinking that unlocking a new one would require some kind of great quest. The new archetype would be more powerful, but also more specific. Here’s an example of how it might work:
An Arthurian Knight completes a quest where they battle their way through a cave containing terrible beasts, and slays some great evil beast that was troubling an entire region (the kind of thing that would earn you a place in legend). Besides that character getting all sorts of rewards, the knightly archetype Monster Slayer would be unlocked. This type would have a specialization in glaive and could choose it’s second specialization (Arthurian normally gets to choose two), and it would have a trophy belt, whereby two trophies could be displayed which would give benefits to the knight. Besides the knight who did the killing, any recently created (or still waitlisted) knight could change to the new archetype. After that moment though, archetypes would be locked again. Also, anyone joining the game could choose to join as a Monster Slayer.
