So any way to attack goblin strongholds?
« on: October 26, 2013, 11:58:25 pm »

When embarking I see massive goblin bases, and after sometime they obviously siege and attack your fortress. Is it possible to attack them from your own fort somehow? Or is it possible to embark on a goblin stronghold with military dwarfs and few essentials to make an outpost and slowly take over or something? If not that would add an interesting dynamic to the game and history :).

Sorry this should probably have gone in the gameplay questions category.

Just wait a few more weeks, then you can.

You seem to be under the impression that we're playing some game other than dwarf fortress. It doesn't matter how powerful you make a creature, we will find a way to destroy it. God is dead, and Urist killed him.

I don't think you can send out squads to attack goblin fortresses in fortress mode. Unless you mean send an adventurer, recruit dwarves from your own fortress, and attack the goblin fortress with your recruited army in adventurer mode, in the next version.

Since they are purely abstract right now, there is simply nothing there to actually embark on. Still though, the goblin towers/strongholds would be huge, exceeding the maximum 16x16 embark plot.

I think they're exactly 16x16, actually, though they're very rarely lined up properly to the game grid.

The closest I've come to taking the fight to the goblins is to go there as an adventurer. There's no structure and you won't find goblins at all, but if you sleep they will ambush you just about every time. It's very hard to kill all the goblins this way.

Just wait a few more weeks, then you can.
I have no idea why you would say this, or how accurate it is. Mind elaborating?

actually i think you will have some kind of contributing military role in fortress modenext patch.
on the current dev list:
"Ability to send out fortress dwarves to lead larger groups of surrounding dwarves out around mid-level maps (or just go alone)"
if we trust today when he says he'll be finished the list in a few weeks hehe

I am quite looking forward to the next 20 or 30 years or so of developmental madness

Yea I meant through fortress mode, but in adventure mode the addition would be cool as well. To bad they are empty, maybe at some point in the future :). It would be great to be able to take them out and read about it in legends mode.

Hopefully in that quote Toady is paving the way to eventually add such a feature.

The list on the current development page isn't the list Toady was referring to, his current list is just a teensy part of the dev page goals. Hard to say when he'll get around to army stuff, but not for another few years anyway at the very least :>

can you link the actual list please or isn't it publicly available?

Not publicly available per se, but there's an unofficial document listing all known features in the coming version. I'll see if I can dig it up :P

Edit: Link

So basically, the list Toady speaks of is his own list of whatever is left to fix for all these features ^^

It's hard to see how the heck you'd be able to send out sufficient military forces, when your own fortress can only hold a max of about 250 without lagging out.

Seriously, the goblins send, like, fourty, every year. An average fortress is barely able to get fourty migrants every year.

Obviously you send out your best trained and equipped, spartan-like dwarfs...or armies of legendary wax workers with copper weapon and a wooden shield, that been conditioned for their demise in danger rooms.

If I recall correctly, the idea was that your legendary military dwarves would act like high ranking officers, and go train / conscript dwarves from surrounding hill sites. The mindless conscripts would be the majority of your army, your legendary warriors the sharp tip.

Also, the way battles work in world gen is essentially an organized line that leads to a 1v1 dual. If your side loses the dual, the next in line takes their place. This is how clowns can have kill counts in the high thousands, and how a 70 dwarf force can take on a 10,000 goblin force. So technically, right now you wouldn't need the numbers, just the skill.

Well....that sucks. Throattomes has been standing for nearly twenty years, and it still hasn't earned a single legendary warrior......seriously, what's it take to train these guys?
