I'm on a boat!

We seem to be set on having nautical adventures with a boat, so I'm making some suggestions:

Viable Options for the base chassis boat:
Caravel: The jack of all trades options, not too expensive(10,000 gp), good seaworthiness(+4), lots of cargo space(120 tonnes), can't use oars in bad winds or no winds.
Elf Wingship: The fastest ship(4mph), expensive(40000gp), not for sale to non-elves, not a lot of cargo space(30 tonnes), bad shiphandling(-2)
Pinnace: Cheap(4500gp), small crew requirement(3), slightly less seaworthy than the above(+2), smaller cargo space(30 tonnes), can't mount a heavy weapon

Personal suggestion: Caravel

Suggested Weaponry:
1 Heavy Bombard
We can get some ballistaes later when we can enchant them.

Suggested augmentation(high priority to avoid getting stuck without wind):
Wind-Favored Sails, Lesser(40500gp): Ensures we always have a strong wind in our sails, setting our base speed at x3 the speed of the ship.

Skills: We're going to have some profession(sailor) ranks to make use of our ship and profession(siege engineer) to work the bombard. Hirelings may or may not be needed depending on choice of ship. Leadership could cover that, or one of us could craft some golems, or something else.

Golems might be a bit too heavy for a ship, just saying :P

That, and we don't really have a price for a ballista. Or a bombard. So we can't really function that into our budget so...

As a question, why start at such a high level?

Not as much fun starting at a lower level. Means we can skip to the good bits right away :D

Meant to include that, the heavy bombard costs 8000gp, ballista costs 500gp.

I think using the ballistae may be cheaper and lighter, so ammo shouldn't be as much of a weight concern.

Caravel is the best option it seems. We shall see how much money we have to spend on ships and weapons after we buy all our character gear.

If I ever make a character, I'm putting in some gold!

Sorry to double post, but would it be Okay to play an Anthrobear? http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/Anthromals_(3.5e_Race)

The STR bonus will make the weapon finesse feat I'm required to take fro Dread Pirate useless, but its bonus to intimidate stacks very well with Dread Pirates intimidate bonuses and intimidate powered 5th level ability.

That's homebrew, so I'd be a little wary of the quality of that. I'd suggest being an afflicted weretiger if you could get Remuthra to waive some (Or all) of the LA on it.

You could also try the Anthropomorphic Animal template from the appendix of Savage Species.

Eh. I'm still browsing. If I'm going to have a drow and a Tiefling on my crew, I might as well be something a little nasty myself. Hobgoblin looks okay if I can get the LA of 1 taken care of...
