We currently have a calico that we took in from my brother's landlady's aunt. That owner had her declawed on both the front and rear paws, which is rather sad. She's gotten alarmingly vocal in the past few years, meowing loudly whenever she wants anything. She also does this thing where rather than bothering to run up the stairs to see if someone's up there, she'll yowl until someone responds, just so she doesn't waste the trip, presumably. Aside from that she's very good natured, and usually just wants someone to sit on.

My father has a black cat in Denver that's almost completely silent, which is a relief whenever I drive down there. It's easy to not notice him though, especially since I'm used to our cat going off like a proximity mine when you step within 5 feet of her.

Calicos and torties tend to be very vocal.  My Carly yells a lot, and she's usually loud.  She also does a lot of very bossy sounding chirping.  I swear, she thinks I'm her over-sized, mostly hairless kitten. I love her to death; she's quite a character.

Also, she fuzzes up and runs around the house almost every morning.  She doesn't like it when I make toast: she yells at me, sounding distressed/concerned, the whole time.  Sometimes she does that when I use the microwave, too.  I taught her to play fetch, and for ages her favorite fetch item was cough drops.  Once she brought me the whole bag.  I drew the line when she brought me a book of matches!

Yup.  The volume varies.  I had friends with a lovely fluffy tortie, and she would meow, but mostly she chirped at me a lot when I cat sitted for them once.  I also find both types are usually very outgoing and want to visit with everyone, or are scaredy-cats with everyone but their person.  Carly is like that: everyone is scary but me.

Oh god, the yowling... my cat does it, but not to check if someone is on the other floor: quite to the contrary, she does that when she's alone, to call someone, or in general in distress.

Yeah. We have a tortoiseshell that chirrups and meows pretty much non-stop. The other rarely meows, and instead lets out a strangled 'a... a...' noise. When she wants in or has caught something, she meows like she wants to deafen us.

The tortoiseshell, however, is much more skittish around new people. If you sit still and call her over, she'll eventually head over to you, but if you walk in and she's not seen you before, she'll try to give you a wide berth.

Those chirrups are an interesting thing, when the cat pretends to be a machinegun (me-e-e-e-e-w, staccato kinda thing, chattering) with an exaggerated jaw motion it's hunting, when the cat  (Mew. Mew. - might be what you describe, closet mouth) it's basically cat equivalent of 'Yo' - both as in 'Hello' and as 'Hey, you there'.

My cat does this when he is about to attack something. It's very disconcerting. Usually this noise is a sound of affection, but for some reason my cat uses it as a "warning: I'm going to claw something's face off" signal. I don't know if I'll ever get used to it.

There is a difference, the affection one starts at a higher pitch and is shorter, the MURDERIZE! one starts lower and is longer.

Although unless we start posting sound files, it's going to be hard to argue

Yeah, I know there are different ones and believe me, I've had cats my whole life and I know them all. This is the affectionate sound. High and short, sounds like he wants to snuggle. I can read all his body language perfectly, I know what every sound means... But I'll never get used to a cat using this sound to indicate he wants to kill something.
