Cats? Cats.

I feel like a traitor. My first though was 'That's a nice-looking house!', and not 'KITTEHS!'. Granted, the second thought was 'KITTEHS!', but second ain't first.

I cannot live with my betrayal.

Always had cats growing up, probably always will have them.

Biggest problem I have with cats is relocating them. There's a 50/50 chance they simply won't come back. Once we had to move into a 1 room 'live in" hotel while the house was being worked on. Completely changed my cats' personalities. Being unable to let them out because there were major streets and businesses all around the hotel, they stayed couped up inside for 6 months. Now they believe that if they can't see food, it must not be there (since the only thing for them to do in the hotel room was stare at their food dishes.) So they will eat and an hour later whine for me to go downstairs and feed them....despite there still be food in their bowls. Took them years to relearn that they could go look for food before demanding I feed them. They're both still totally neurotic about eating though.

I've got two, a half-Maine Coone mutt and a Russian Blue, probably also somewhat of a mutt. The Maine Coone, Jingo, is "mine" by virtue of him having the strongest connection to me and me leaving the biggest imprint on his personality. He's super expressive, vocal, affectionate, needy, lovable and annoying as shit all at once. He's a lab cat that was in drug trials and was adopted out after they were over. If you look you can still see the faint tattoo on the inside of his ear. It's kinda funny. Since he grew up on concrete floors, he overcompensates today by kneading the shit out of everything: carpet, wood, jeans, flesh. It was kinda funny when we first brought him home, he literally could not walk straight on carpet because he'd never experienced a surface with give before. Took him weeks to get used to it. Longer still for walking on grass.

The Russian Blue, Dinkin, is no one's cat but his own. He's basically the opposite of Jingo. Quiet, reserved, aloof, independent. Where is Jingo is skinny, almost too thin, Dinkin is round and chubby. He can be affectionate but you have to catch him at the right time. He's not a huge fan of being petted, especially on the head....but if you stick feet in his face he will love up on them all day. I've pulled this cat's ass from the fire so many times I'm starting to lose count. He likes to roam, has to go outside every night or he meows up a storm. Sometimes he'll go missing for a day or two. When it hits three days, we know something has happened. Once I found him after he was MIA for days, laying in the basement nearly dead from dehydration, malnutrition and a pretty nasty virus. The same virus caught my attention a year later, although he wasn't quite so bad off that time. I've pulled him from Raccoon Traps the neighbors have put out. I think I've even pulled him out of a neighbor's yard when he let himself get cornered by a dog. I sort of expect him to just not come home one day, because that's the way he wants it. For all that, he can be absurdly cute when he wants to be, in a chubby, butterball kinda way.

We have two cats, one a blind black cat (that my sister named Ray Charles :p ), the other a brown and white cat named Ella.

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

It's ok, my first thought was "Hey, that one in the top right looks a bit like one of my cats!"
Then I thought "KITTEHS"
(I just now realized that there is a second cat, even further to the top right.)

Spoiler: Frank Sinatra (click to show/hide)

As in the singer, Ol' Blue Eyes.  Full blood Siamese, and he's so damn proud of it.

He's really my mother's cat but he's half as old as I am and we lived in the same house long enough that he was basically my cat for a while.  He still has to prove he's mad at me for a few hours whenever I visit, and doesn't warm up to me until I get in bed, then he's fast asleep on my crotch like always.

He was also born terribly crosseyed, so mother had him declawed so she could keep him indoors.  Then she moved in with a guy who already had cats and Frankie could never be kept indoors again.  He's well aware of his limitations, which is why he's still alive, but the orneriest little bastard you ever met.

Also, check out my mother's Poltergeist doll in the background.  Holy crap do I hate that thing.

So if I were to get a cat with the intention of keeping it inside mostly, would it be good or bad to have it declawed? I have heard that some people are dead against it, and I'm just wondering why.
Cats use their claws in a similar way to us using fingers. Gripping things, pulling and such. I'd advise scratching posts and if the cat has a go at the furniture, stare at it/spray with a water bottle/ignore it after chasing it off.
Gripping, playing, traction and balance. Imagine having your fingers removed down to the second knuckle - claws are far too useful in a cat's everyday existence to be done away with lightly. Like greatorder said, scratching post + training is the way to go. If you're valuing your furniture above the well-being of your cat, it might be worth a rethink of whether you really want one.

Traction, yeah. My cat was clumsy as hell on wooden floors and tiles - that being pretty much all the flooring on the ground floor of my old house - when she would sprint and try to turn, she would end up with her two front legs and upper body turning, and two hind legs and lower body sliding uncontrollably on the floor. More than once the cat ended up spinning 180 degrees.

Meanwhile, upstairs, where the floor was carpeted, she never had this problem because she clawed into the carpet. It wasn't even really damaged, honestly.

This is literally what declawing involves. They remove the last bone in the cat's toes to prevent the claws from going back, it's extremely unpleasant for the cat.

I recommend trying a multitude of scratching surfaces to deal with the issue of furniture damage, and things like chair covers. If you've got multiple cats, something I've noticed is that our cats don't like to use the same surfaces, and they have different tastes.

Course I've yet to figure out how to stop Sugar from scratching my bag. I think she really likes the shape and position of it.

Bad, bad, bad.

It's the equivalent to removing the first finger joints on each hand. Cats can't groom themselves properly without claws. Or walk properly. Or defend themselves. Or do the anything.

So cruel just because someone can't be bothered to train their cat to only scratch on a scratching post.

It's a banned practice in my country. (Animal cruelty laws)

The only thing worse than declawing a cat is de-fanging it. When I meet people who have done that to their cats, I basically cross them off my list of people I want to know.

My cat is close to being declawed because no one can bother to get her a proper scratching post.

We had a scratching surface that she used to use but we moved it to a door, and because it is on the door she doesn't like to use it.

I can't do anything about it because I am allergic.

It'd be more humane to let the cat live elsewhere. It is that bad.

That said, nothing in my house is worth getting worked up over due to scratching, and my cat prefers scratching the doorway in any case, so I am not one to talk.

This thread is relevant to my interests.

Cats are pretty cool, although I honestly have never had a pet cat that I can remember. The few times my family has had one were times I was too young to distinctly remember, except for a specific cat being a huge jerk who loved to bite everyone.  Not just nips or something, full blown "sink the teeth into your achilles heel" biting. T'was pretty much a sadist cat. We must have put him in a shelter or something.

Doubtful I'd get a cat to care for myself until I move out and get my own place. My mom developed asthma in the years since that one biter. Instant no to any prospect of a cat. Also the whole litterbox thing is a major argument against it. Also we almost always have a dog. Anytime where we're between dogs is just time until we get the next dog. :P
